Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, - "great" and rajan - "king". Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. This newest Avery Dictator completes the "Dictator Series" joining the likes of The Kaiser & The Czar. Be aware that The Maharaja is a limited release only available for the summer. Welcome to his kingdom!

Editor's Note: the 2007 version was 9.78%.

The Maharaja is defintely one of the better double IPAs. I really enjoyed the nose in this beer, with such a floral and hoppy aroma that I was bent over the bar savoring. The body was very enjoyable with notes of caramel malt, along with a huge presense of hops, grapefruit, grass and a touch of earth. The finish may have been the best part of this beer, with ballance that rivals the best in the business. Maharaja has the malty backbone and the big hoppiness that one expects and hopes for in a great double IPA.

TAP: pale orange, clear pour. Small head, semi-bold citrus hop nose. Loads of hops, well balanced. Would never guess 10%+ ABV, very well hidden. Creamy taste.

Poured from tap into Pint glass. Nice and hoppy with a citrus aftertaste. Little sweet, but not too much. One of my favorite IPA’s. Only wish it was around more.

Batch 9 Feb 2009 Pours a clear copper with thin lines of carbonation bubbles that continuously flow to the base of a large frothy white head. Aroma is inviting; pine needles, pineapple, and grapefruit, with and underlying malt sweetness. Flavor is a wonderful blend of citric hops and sweet malt, a little on the sweet side, but that doesn’t take away from the hops at all. Alcohol is pretty well hidden too. Really enjoyed this one, definitely going to drink again.

Bomber. Dark orange, nearly maroon color, medium sized white head. Nice aroma with a mix of grassy hops and caramel. Full bodied with a lot of peppery hops, grass, and a surprisingly strong sugary sweet element. To me, it tastes a lot more like a barleywine than what I’d expect out of a IIPA. Burns a bit on the way down, but that’s to be expected with a beer this big. Good, but not the best of the style.
