Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, - "great" and rajan - "king". Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. This newest Avery Dictator completes the "Dictator Series" joining the likes of The Kaiser & The Czar. Be aware that The Maharaja is a limited release only available for the summer. Welcome to his kingdom!

Editor's Note: the 2007 version was 9.78%.

Pours a with a large off-white head, a hazy golden color, lots of lacing. A nice amount of hops as well as nice roasted malts, I get some orange. A big hit of hops with some fruit and citrus, followed quickly by a burst of malt sweetness and some complex roasty flavors. Not much of a finish. A bit old, could be better if it was fresh, but some very complex and tasty things going on.

Reddish golden color. Taste have notes af caramel, pine syrup and alcohol. The alcohol is too dominant. this beer is an owerkill, too much sweetnes and alcohol. I like strong and extreme beers but they have to be in balance and very complex. This is one of the few beers i coulden finish.

Pours a thick offwhite head with a clear abber color. the nose is nice and bitter with floral and roasted almond in it. You can really smell the lemon grass and citrus hops. It is a thin bitter IPA with bitter hops and a strong initial bite. It leaves some streaks along the sides of the glass and the head retention is excellent. Overall it has great carbonation and is well balanced.

Nice amber color. Aroma of grapefruit, alcohol, mango, faint grass, faint floral, and cream. Tastes lightly sweet with strong alcohol, strong grapefruit rind, and bitter flavor. Beer has an oily texture, average carbonation, medium body, and a long bitter finish. I like this better with food (especially spicy food) - the strong bitterness cleanses my palate.

Bomber. Snifter. Outstanding aroma. Pours copper with weak head, moderate lacing. Flavor is less pronounced than the aroma, with the initial explosion of flavors - bitter citrus, pine, some malt for balance - quickly giving way to the 10.27% alcohol, which is fine by me. Palate is outstanding - heavy liquid with active carbonation. Having completed my rating, I’m now enjoying the remainder with spicy scallops and yakisoba noodles. Solid pairing!

Pours orange with a fluffy white head. Aroma is pretty hoppy with a little malt. Flavor is well balanced with a strong hop kick and nice sweet malts. Worth trying.

Pours a clear orange color with a huge white head that definitely takes it’s time to dissipate. Aroma is citrus hops, with hints of grapefruit and apricot. Flavor is very much hop-forward with just the slightest bit of biscuit malt. A very nice IIPA, but could use a little more in the way of complexity.
