Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, - "great" and rajan - "king". Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. This newest Avery Dictator completes the "Dictator Series" joining the likes of The Kaiser & The Czar. Be aware that The Maharaja is a limited release only available for the summer. Welcome to his kingdom!

Editor's Note: the 2007 version was 9.78%.

Bomber. Pours a nice golden color with a thick white head. Aroma is really fruity with plenty of caramel and malt. Some citrus to. Taste is citrus and grapefruit with a thick layer of caramellmalt and candy notes. The hops seems a bit faded in this one, maybe an old bottle. Finishes pretty dry and bitter.

Batch 9, 2009. 10+% ABV. Pours a clear orange-amber color with a bright white bubbly head. Good proportions! Wild aroma blasts out of the bottle upon opening and smells of roasted nuts and something a bit strange -- maybe peach? Flavor also dances through about 50 different complexities with so many hops included. Strong peppery punch, floral sweetness, and a severe bitter bite!

Batch 10. Cold at first, aroma was muted other than alcohol and Belgian tropical/banana/bubble gum aroma. As it warmed/breathed, aroma developed: alcohol, some lemon and orange oil, spruce, became progressively more melonly, slight banana and bubble gum, big fruit roll ups, some fresh very ripe peaches and some dried strawberry; with lots of extra, general hoppiness. Taste was much the same, with a bit of earthy graininess, spalt or something; bitter, semidry with alcohol. Color was brilliant light brown/orange/red. Palate was slightly sweet, firm, while still thin and dry enough to be drinkable

Pours a with a large off-white head, a hazy golden color, lots of lacing. A nice amount of hops as well as nice roasted malts, I get some orange. A big hit of hops with some fruit and citrus, followed quickly by a burst of malt sweetness and some complex roasty flavors. Not much of a finish. A bit old, could be better if it was fresh, but some very complex and tasty things going on.

Reddish golden color. Taste have notes af caramel, pine syrup and alcohol. The alcohol is too dominant. this beer is an owerkill, too much sweetnes and alcohol. I like strong and extreme beers but they have to be in balance and very complex. This is one of the few beers i coulden finish.

Pours a thick offwhite head with a clear abber color. the nose is nice and bitter with floral and roasted almond in it. You can really smell the lemon grass and citrus hops. It is a thin bitter IPA with bitter hops and a strong initial bite. It leaves some streaks along the sides of the glass and the head retention is excellent. Overall it has great carbonation and is well balanced.

Nice amber color. Aroma of grapefruit, alcohol, mango, faint grass, faint floral, and cream. Tastes lightly sweet with strong alcohol, strong grapefruit rind, and bitter flavor. Beer has an oily texture, average carbonation, medium body, and a long bitter finish. I like this better with food (especially spicy food) - the strong bitterness cleanses my palate.
