Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, - "great" and rajan - "king". Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. This newest Avery Dictator completes the "Dictator Series" joining the likes of The Kaiser & The Czar. Be aware that The Maharaja is a limited release only available for the summer. Welcome to his kingdom!

Editor's Note: the 2007 version was 9.78%.

Bottle. Pours bright orange with an off white head. Huge hoppy aroma, floral, sweet citrus and pine. The flavor doesn’t quite live up to the aroma. Sweet hops, caramel malt and pine resin. An excellent IIPA.

Wonderful! The aroma is so fresh, the hops almost smell like fresh pot. The body is resiny, thick malt, caramel with a full dose of hops at the end. Delicious.

Tons of fresh hops, pine and citrus in the nose. Sweet malt as well. Flavor is a good balance of caramel, sweet sugar, hop bitterness, floral and citrus and pine hops. Excellent beer. Was part of a blind IPA/IIPA tasting. One of my favorites of the night. Unexpected.

On tap @ Map Room. Clear amber beer w/ a large cream; floral hops aroma reminiscent of the Dreadnaught/FFF and sweet malt and grapefruit; flavor is sweet caramel, more hops; nose has a unique sauerkraut undertone; finish is very long and bitter. Better than Hopslam I think, but no Dreadnaught.

On tap at The Brass Rail. Clear copper topped by a lasting creamy white head. Smell and flavor are both big & beautiful loads of hops. Pine, citrus, mango, and caramel. Very resinous. Long lasting deeply bitter finish. Easily the best beer I have had from Avery.

This beer is a big boy. Heavy body, lots of ingredients, hopped out, and just one of two will definately get my buzz going. This dictator series is nice. Citrus, pine, meets maltiness and achieves balance.

From a 22oz bomber this brew poured an orange color with thick white head and plenty of lacing - strong malty, pine and hoppy scents. Lots of malt, hops and citrus in the taste along with some pine and floral follow up... nice beer that certainly didn’t disappoint!
