kurtzj (11), Texas, USA Apr 27, 2009 Served in a snifter at the Austin Flying Saucer. Mahogany body, golden around the edges, 1 finger off-white head lasts about a minute. Strong grapefruit smell and initial taste, enough carbonation to excite the tongue and back of the throat. Citrus/hops and alcohol battle for dominance throughout. Overall, a must try! coharahawk (87), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Apr 26, 2009 On tap at Ginger Man. Pours a golden-amber with good sized off-white head. The nose was bursting with fresh pineapple. There was also pine, citrus, and lots of floral notes. It has a delicious hop profile with lots of sticky, sweet hops and finishes fairly bitter. It also has a nice malt backbone. There is almost no hint of the 10% ABV. This is a great DIPA and I’ll definitely have to get again. It actually reminds me a little of the Plinys, which is awesome. BigBang (210), Indiana, USA Apr 25, 2009 On tap. This is solid. One of the maltier IIPAs. Pours a reddish amber color with small head. Has the expected piney citrus nose. Good bitterness and moderate sweetness. Enjoyed. Pinball (2694), Allerød, Denmark Apr 25, 2009 bottled 2006 acc. to label.
bottle at ølbaren. As avery doesn’t bother printing best before dates, i guess the beer is good forever so this low rating is their (avery’s) own fault.
soursih hoppy aroma
clear oarange, small white head.
flavor is hoppy, but also stale . also a flavor that cound be a brewing error or bad aging (sort of plastic like)
overall might have been good few years ago, but this one probably didn’t age very well. please, brewers, print your guestimate of a best before date on the bottle.
mcc5468 (102), USA Apr 24, 2009 Pours a nice dark orange. Aroma is citrus and pine. Head is medium. Taste is definitely hoppy, I swear there were pineapples in there but in a good way. Alcohol is present but not overpowering. Great Imperial. Definitely would drink again. LtDan (471), LA - Originally from South NJ!, California, USA Apr 24, 2009 Aroma: Danky bud, lemons, oranges, grapefruit, and spicy malt.
Appearance: A clear, bright gold/amber/orange.
Flavor: Crazy citrusy bitterness. A good level of caramel malt as well.
Palate: Tongue curling, moderately carbonated.
Overall: Definitely The Maharaja! ben4321 (960), Rockville, Maryland, USA Apr 24, 2009 Location: I’ve had this one a few time, I remember the first tasting being on tap in Denver, CO. I guess I never rated it then.
This rating 700 ml bottle from Gilly’s, 4/24/09
Aroma: Pine, hops, some alcohol, a little caramel
Appearance: Clearish golden-red color
Flavor: Nice pine/citrus hoppiness you’d expect from the style, but pretty balanced with the malt backing.
Palate: Great mouthfeel. Really smooth for a DIPA, that is for sure.
Overall Impression:
Really nice beer. If you’re a Double/Imperial IPA fan or even just a beer fan try this one. One of those beers that goes a little too quickly every time you drink it. I might be bias, because I love big, powerful IPAs, but I really like this one. How have I not rated this one before? Great beer! mgermani (862), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Apr 24, 2009 Pours a clear ruby-red with nearly no head. Boozy, sweet malt aroma. Fruity, sweet sweet malting - surprising, considering I was anticipating a dry, bitter imperial IPA. Very much a winter beer - lots of heat from the alcohol, lingering alco-burn in the finish. Decent carbonation, chewy body. This is more of a stock-ale or Barleywine than an Imperial IPA - I really was expecting more hops and less sweetness. Also, even though my bottle was already aged 1 year, it was still too young to drink, quite unblended and a bit messy. There is lots of potential here, but as a different style with longer aging.
