22 oz bomber: Light amber w/ a lasting, medium sized caramelized marshmallow head. Aroma is lemony, grassy, and lightly piney hop to start. Some toasty malt as it warms as well as mild caramel. Fruitiness is all about the citrusy hop! Balanced lightly to bitter. Toasty malt flavor to go along with the bitterness, but bitterness lingers into the finish and aftertaste which is grassy and herbal hop. Some citrusy hop flavors(grapefruit and pineapple. Moderate fruitiness. Sweetness grows as it warms, but remains bitter in the finish. Full body, well hidden alcohol, lower carbonation. Nice IIPA! Not as good as Dreadnaught, but a solid beer from Avery.

UPDATED: MAY 7, 2005 Poured a orange/brown color I guess you could say copper. Thick white head. Aroma of a freshly cut ruby red grapefruit and a little floral and sugar. Very sugery mouthfeel that was annoying at first but wore you down after a little while Medium bodied and malty, I couldn’t really get the hops I wanted out this beer untill the second glass when it had warmed considerably. Nice bitter finish. I much prefer the Avery 11.

This brew is a somewhat cloudy dark amber color with a medium thin and densely packed light beige head. Thin, stringy lacing. The aroma is nicely floral hops with some grapefruit. Medium-bodied with a robust hops flavor. Doesn’t really have the complexity that some of my favorite Imperial IPAs have but there is a nice amount of hops, citrus and pine. The finish is bitter and lasting, with a hint of sweetness here and there. All in all an enjoyable beer.

22 oz. Bottle. Slightly murky deep copper color with a frothy heand great lacing. Great grapfruit and pine nose with a hint of sweet malt. Big maltly meets hoppy flavors. Pine, grapefruit, citrus, with medium bitterness, but lots of hop flavor. Very nicely done beer.

Bottled. Hazy orange/amber. Strong aroma of grapefruit and alcohol. Sweet and sugary, boldly malty. Full bodied with clean mouthfeel. There’s lots of pine needles, resin and syrup. The finish is resiny and really bitter. I am really a fan of the older products from Avery, but the new extreme ones seem always to be raw and primitive in mouthfeel with excessive alcohol and syrup. They try to hide these shortcomings with ridiculous amount of hops. Despite this, I don’t think this is a bad beer, but I don’t like they way this great brewery is taking.

Aromas of citrus and forest variety. Amber body with a thin tan head. Flavor all I can say here is, this is a hop fest with the alcohol kick to it. Cool and crisp on the palate. Had a sample at a beer fest but wanted to have a full glass to see if it was as good as I origionaly thought. It’s good.

Pours orange amber with a big well totally retained beige colored head. Aroma is big, piney, citrus, resiny, with just enough of a hint of malt to let you know its there buried under tons of hops. Flavor is initially bitter, then its bitter some more and it finishes bitter. There has got to be a malt backbone, but it is really hard to find through all of the hops. A bit one dimensional, but that is OK by me as I love massive hoppiness. Also, the alcohol peeks through just a bit more than I would like. Yummy!!!

Sampled from a 22oz bomber at Brewtopia ’05. Dark amber color with a good sized off white head. Strong hop aroma with some citrus and pine along with a nice sweet maltiness. Hop flavor was much more subdued than I expected. Instead the sweet malt flavor stood out to me followed by the hops. Alcohol was barely noticeable. Very enjoyable.

22 oz bottle: clear, blazed pumpkin with a cavernous ivory froth…initially run-of-the-mill hop cone aroma turns lightly sweet with vanilla icing and chlorophyll. Creamy, brown sugar and maple flavoured palate with a light grit and more than its fair share of hops. Overall much more balanced with sweet malt than I expected (when I thought about Avery 11)…nice job guys.

Draft - last remnents of Gravity Head. Big grassy hop nose. Surprisingly smallish head that was quickly gone. Dark, dirty golden color. Taste of grassy hops, malt and alcohol. This is a good beer, but I’ve been having a few Great Divide Hercules lately - and much prefer it. I think because the hop flavor is somewhat hidden in this one. Hard to imagine this is true in 112 IBU, but ...
