Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, - "great" and rajan - "king". Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. This newest Avery Dictator completes the "Dictator Series" joining the likes of The Kaiser & The Czar. Be aware that The Maharaja is a limited release only available for the summer. Welcome to his kingdom!

Editor's Note: the 2007 version was 9.78%.

Aroma is sweet, malty, tons of pine, resin, and herbal qualities. Taste is sweet, piny, and resinous. There is some citrus and sharp alcohol and hop bitterness present. Finish is slightly rough, sweet, and piny. Yum.

This beer was very good! Poured a nice light copper color with a terrific two finger thick dense white head. The head left beautiful lacing, adding to this beer experience. The aroma was amazing. It smelled very strongly of citrusy fruit, it really reminded me of grapefruit. But it was a beautiful aroma with earthy hops coming through as well. The flavor was surprisingly smooth and sweet up front eventually giving way to some bitterness. Finish was dry and bitter. This was a fantastic IIPA.

ok this was awesome. got to have back to back tasting of 2007 and 2008. both were vastly different, due to age on the hops. ’07 pours rich copper with nice white head. aroma is tons of citrus like grapefruit, orange, lemon, clementine. drinks very bittersweet with tons of grapefruit upfront, orange and clementine peak through, and lemon and grapefruit finish. bitter citrus after taste lingers! ’08 pours rich copper with full white head. aroma is very floral and piny with a resounding resiny smell. drinks with a bitter bite and very floral. drinks gritty and resiny with lots of pine finishing. some malt is in there, but doesnt really show. both fantastic, and even better back to back!

On tap @ Fathers Office. Aroma is of grapefruit, citrus, hops. Tastes of fresh hops, pine, grapefruit, and the alcohol is very well hidden. Only notes can be detected. This is another one of my favorite IIPA’s.

Pours a gorgeous orange color with a thin white head. Aroma is like a Christmas tree that has Grapefruit ornaments. Lots of hop character but with a solid malt backbone. Almost perfectly balanced. The hops just keep coming, but never feel like they’re punching you in the teeth. This is a fantastic Double IPA.

on tap @Capones–pours a white head and gold color. Aroma is resin. Taste is resin hops-some bitter, some syrupy, light medium malt. Dry finish.

On tap at Fries. Citrusy grapefruit hops reign supreme in the aroma of this beer! It pours a thick orange-gold with a bit of off white head. The flavor matches the aroma, huge citrusy American hops with sweet malt background. The mouthfeel is fairly thick, perfect for an imperial IPA. Overall, very good, but a bit less complex than the highest ranked IIPAs.

22 oz. bomber, Batch 9 Feb 2009. Thick head lasting throughout the pint. Clear copper color with constant trickles of carbonation. Distinct citrus aroma with undertones of pine. Amalgam of both hops and citrus in taste, which resolves into a hoppy, better finish. And in the tradition of colorado brews, a crisp finish. One of my favourites.
