cheapdark (2011), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 21, 2009 On tap at the Vintage Estates in Ohio, nice place! Looks like darker ginger ale, same bubbling action within. Has a big alabaster head. Smells quite pine hoppy, almost like crinkled up pine needles or spruce. Initial flavors are a weird cobonation of green grapefruit rinds and old worn out leather. A little different than the usual DPA. Reminds me a little of when I need to siphon gas for the Harley or lawn mower. Long bitter medicinal linger, whew! tarheels86 (704), Washington DC, USA Mar 18, 2009 500 mL into snifter. Pours a hazy brownish pink with a modest yellow head that settles down quickly but leaves very nice lacing. Aroma of candied strawberries, caramel malt, floral hops. No citrus hops....perhaps not fresh enough. Taste is interesting: very creamy and almost heavy mouthfeel with lots of black pepper. Drying towards the finish again with a heavy dose of black pepper. Strange. Perhaps this is just an expired bottle or has skunked.....wasn’t the IPA let alone the IIPA invented to prevent skunking? 10.5% is very well hidden though. jeremytoni (1069), Swedesboro, New Jersey, USA Mar 18, 2009 From the tap poured amber with a fair amount of head. Nice sweet malty/hoppy flavor with a lingering finish. WinoInTraining (104), Longmont, Colorado, USA Mar 17, 2009 Feb 2009 batch. From the tap room at Avery. Gobs of Hops. Thats the only way the describe it. Deep amber, that sweet and sticky hop edge, that totally reminds you of the freshies. Tangerine, caramel, nice core of rich malt but maintains youthfull freshness. Enjoy as young as possible. randolphjj (89), Raymore, Missouri, USA Mar 16, 2009 May 2008 batch. Pours a gorgeous cloudy copper with a thin white head. Nose hits you with a malty kind of toffee. First taste lets you know there’s a lot going on inside... but with an IPA I’m expecting big hops -- and I’m sure they’re there -- but the malt really takes over and masks the traditional big IPA taste. I’m thinking Belgian IPA... can you do that? Overall, a good experience and one to try. IPAGargoyleGuy (139), Troy, NY, New York, USA Mar 13, 2009 On tap at the Blind Tiger Ale House. Piney and biting hops balances well woith sweet malts. The Simcoe dominates, and boy do I love SImcoe. COseller187 (7), Colorado, USA does not count Mar 13, 2009 Greatest IPA ever made. If you haven’t had the maharaja and you have the ability to get it you are a FOOL. If you can’t get the maharaja you should live in a constant state of depression and feel the whole deep inside your soul. Go find this beer and become one again.
