Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, - "great" and rajan - "king". Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. This newest Avery Dictator completes the "Dictator Series" joining the likes of The Kaiser & The Czar. Be aware that The Maharaja is a limited release only available for the summer. Welcome to his kingdom!

Editor's Note: the 2007 version was 9.78%.

Bomber bottle. Pours orange with a scant handful of slo-mo bubbles and an immortal foam rubber head. Fruit-forward aroma screams grapefruit, pineapple, "dank" pine, and peach. Subtle wafts of grape jelly and lemon, as well. Tastes very much like Hawaiian Punch, sugary and fruity. No hop sharpness whatsoever. Against the oversweet background, the timidly bitter finish would go unnoticed if it were not boosted by 10% ethanolic warmth. Full, syrupy palate and ginny aftertaste. So-OMG-predictable... sugary and "C-hoppy", virtually indistinguishable from 3F Dreadnaught or Great Divide Titan. Boring! I’ve had better.

Bright amber with large white head. Aroma of pinecones and flowers. Malty taste with some balance to it from hops and light spices. Good bitter finish. Interesting.

Hazy burnt orange color with a small eggshell head that diminishes quickly. Aroma is sweeter than expected with minimal pine notes and a touch of alcohol. Flavor is honey, citrus, caramel, toffee, and alcohol bite. A bit syrupy. Not at all balanced and the emphasis seems to be on strength rather than flavor.

Pours a medium orange/amber with big white head. Aroma is of humungous amounts of grapefruit hops, medium caramel malt backbone, and a little bit of alcohol. Bitterness hits you up front, briefly subsides in the middle, and then carries through to an extremely long finish. There needs to be just a little more malt to balance out the 112 IBUs. With a little more balance, this would be one of the best IIPAs out there, but still very, very good.

Bomber shared at Xmas gathering. Pours orange/red with rimming white head. Grapefruit and resin nose with sugary caramel notes, slight almond/nutty character. Taste is alcohol hot with lots of caramel backbone and decent bitter. Nice grapefruit hop flavor and rather dry. Tasty IIPA.

Bomber. Smells strongly of Malt and pine. Color is a dirty orange/copper with a quickly disappearing head. Strong malt flavor and lots of hoppy bliss.Defintiely sicks to the palate. Finishes with notes of malt, citrus, and bread. All washed down with a good alcohol burn. All around pure unadulterated goodness.

Draught @ The Brew Kettle, Strongsville, Ohio - I had no idea the reputation behind this one when I ordered it, although the name was intriguing. Came golden orange in colour, a nice foam head. Hop punch in the aroma with citrus, some malts breaking through. I could nary wait a moment to sip, and what a sip it was. Deranged hops is right, but man is it good. Citrus, floral, all the hop dudes are there. A ton of them, balanced by plenty of biscuity malt, grass, and honey. Just awesome.. if Ontario ever imports this my new hobby will be inebriation.

Bottle, EBF 08. Slightly copper mid amber with a white declining head. Lovely hoppy, fruity nose, lots of tangy bitterness on the tongue. Good balance between malt sweetness and hop bittterness. Great finish!
