Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, - "great" and rajan - "king". Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. This newest Avery Dictator completes the "Dictator Series" joining the likes of The Kaiser & The Czar. Be aware that The Maharaja is a limited release only available for the summer. Welcome to his kingdom!

Editor's Note: the 2007 version was 9.78%.

On tap-pours a medium copper color w/a moderate white head. Pine Hop aroma. Has a nice bitter hop bite up front, aggressive, but not so strong it knocks you over. Has some citrus & pine as well. Hard to believe this is a 10+% beer, actually pretty smooth to drink. Reminded me of a Dogfish 90 minute. Long, full finish.

Pours dark copper like a Marzen; huge creamy beige head. Aggressive citrus and herbal hop bouquet overlying a dark toffee malt aroma. The tongue is dominated by the hop bitterness as it mostly occults the amber malts which do manage to produce a hint of apricot sweetness. I like hops but this is a bit unbalanced as the bitterness isn’t backed by much hop flavor. Medium body with a slick mouthfeel, long pleasant finish. This, to me, is more like an overly hopped Amber or Red than an Imperial IPA.

Draft @ Monster B’s. Clear orange body with a thin taupe head. Much more than your typical imerpial IPA, the hops are there but there is a strong orange undertone and despite the high ABV, the alcohol flavor is subtle. Highly recommend.

Sampled on draft at Max’s Taphouse in Baltimore. A clear, dense amber color with a clingy, foamy, average-sized, off-white head with good retention. A rich aroma of good pine and grainy hops, maybe some toasty malt too. Nice bitter flavor with a sour finish, and heavy hops in the taste. A very full initial mouthfeel becoming drier as it progresses. Slightly thick on the palate, with good amounts of carbonation; really good IPA.

orangish color with large white head. huge hop nose. flavor has a nice malt component but not much crystal like you would expect in such a hoppy ale. the hop flavor is huge and complex with no single hop variety coming through. a lot of alcoholic complexities but the alcohol is never very evident, which probably is the best part f the beer. a great beer that manages to result in a reasonably balance imperial ipa without a lot of sweet malt. great beer

[1435-20080531] Bottle. Super strong orange hops aroma. Slightly hazy, amber orange body with a light pink off-white head. Nice bitter orange hops flavour with a nice long aftertaste. Medium body. Lovely beverage.

V - clear orange in color with a well enthused slightly off white head that’s slightly lacy.
A - bountiful hops with a distinct undercurrent of sweet caramel
T - limited hops at the start that grows a bit as it settles and then slowly fades into a malty finish
P - rather creamy

Bomber. Cloudy peach-colored pour with an off-white head that slowly collapses to moderate lacing. Nose is wonderful with a strong blast of grapefruit. Citrus and pine also peek out. Taste is a beautiful balance of sweet malt and bitter hops, mitigated by caramel. Mouthfeel is smooth and finish is lovely, lasting and bitter. The high alcohol content is remarkably subdue.
