Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, - "great" and rajan - "king". Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. This newest Avery Dictator completes the "Dictator Series" joining the likes of The Kaiser & The Czar. Be aware that The Maharaja is a limited release only available for the summer. Welcome to his kingdom!

Editor's Note: the 2007 version was 9.78%.

Sampled at Old Chicago in Boulder. Pour was cloudy tan with a decent pinkie size head. Hoppiness was all over this beer, in the scent and in the taste. A very very nice brew.

Love how this beer lingers with hints of citrus and huge malty roasts. Paired with clams and this kid has reached total consciousness.

Bomber. Pours a nice hazy orange with white head. Aroma is a resinous piney hops with a touch of malty sweetness. The flavor is a little bit less harsh than most beers that I’ve had with this type of hop character, and there’s a lot of malt body to provide some balance.

22 oz bottle, batch 7, 2/08. Hazy orange brown with a dense, off-white head that leaves copious lace. Nose is pink grapefruit and tangerine with a bit of brown sugar. Sharp carb counters the oily, thin syrup, mouthfeel. Taste is orange juice concentrate, spruce, juniper and caramel. Lingering bitterness. A little rough and heavy.

A nose of buttercups. Amber coppery light colour. Sweetnes and lots of nice hops. Orange and grapefruit aromas. Some barleywine properties. Alcolhol 9.9%.

Bottle from Rod’s Liquor in Orange, Ca. Pours amber brown with a small tan head. Aroma of sweet hops and slightly citrusy. Flavor begins sweet and hoppy, but ends with alcohol, roasted malts and a mild citrus. A very well-balanced Imperial IPA, the Hops don’t dominate too much. Overall a very enjoyable Imperial IPA!

ABV and bitterness are well balanced. Flavor is not too complex. Huge grapefruit presence and a bit of pine.

This amber ale poured with a generous beige head and an aromatic hop aroma. There is a very hoppy flavor with citrus and pine notes and a slightly sweet malt presence.
