Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, - "great" and rajan - "king". Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. This newest Avery Dictator completes the "Dictator Series" joining the likes of The Kaiser & The Czar. Be aware that The Maharaja is a limited release only available for the summer. Welcome to his kingdom!

Editor's Note: the 2007 version was 9.78%.

(Bottled) Almost clear amber with a small, bubbly head. Nicely aromatic, pine-hoppy nose with some alcoholic barley-wine feel. Flavor is strangely cinnamon-spicy, slightly stingy, not very hoppy, slightly smoother with yeast. Quite full-bodied with low carbonation. Not bad, but quite strange and slightly alcoholic.

(bottle@pikkulintu) this beer is better with yeast. Without yeast, the king alcohol eats all flavours

bomber. i just walked into a pine forest and licked every tree in it, then i just sucked the sap and chased it with alcohol and sucked on a hop to top it off. DAMN! it’s a biggie. avery is beginning to build its name on big ales that pack a bit of a punch. the ’08 version is a whopping 10.54 ABV, with 102 IBU’s. pine, grapefruit rind, honestly - just choking on citrus peel is more like it. this is big, bitter, and fairly offensive. don’t share with your friends...rather, horde for yourself. the only thing that is a slight drawback is the price. i’d like to cellar this for about 2 yrs and see how it holds up to the elements of aging. on the scale of ’ya got it or ya don’t’ it’s ’got it.’

Bottle (22 oz.) @ home. Pours in a clear copper with a large off white head. The aroma is sweet and very hoppy. Citrusy (grapefruit) and piney hops. The flavor is big bold hops with some sweet malts. Big bitter hop finish. Bold IPA with some balance. Up there with the finest DIPA’s out there. Very Nice.

First beer at cb six: a mistake. served in a tulip glass. Hazy orange color, very summery coloring. immediate hops aroma, strong and powerful as a maharaja should be. I would go so far as to say forceful hops aroma. This beer is a palate buster extrordanaire! Crisp and smooth with a flavor of orange and grapefruit rind. THe high alcohol lends it a sweetness in the follow-up, but the aftertaste is all bitter hops. A stand-up beer for extreme drinkers. I’ll take another please
