Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, - "great" and rajan - "king". Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. This newest Avery Dictator completes the "Dictator Series" joining the likes of The Kaiser & The Czar. Be aware that The Maharaja is a limited release only available for the summer. Welcome to his kingdom!

Editor's Note: the 2007 version was 9.78%.

Poured an amber color with a big white head. Aroma of lots of piney hops and pineapple. Flavor of pine and citrus hops with a nice malty finish.

Bottle. Pours a clear orangish copper, with a big creamy white head, and huge sticky lacing. Aroma has lots of pine and big acidic spicy citrus. Vanilla, too. Flavor is spicy; some hot sauce kicks things into gear. Hoppy overall, lots of pine and citrus. Nice malty finish. Full-bodied, very easy to drink, and extremely smooth, despite the hoppy spiciness. Balanced. Like this one.

Bomber shared with nimrod and Illini08 while in line at Dark Lord Day 2008. This poured a beautiful amber color with a nice head that lingered for the duration of the beer. The aroma definitely reminded of of Bells Hopslam but was a little bit less intense. There was a lot of citrus and pine with suggary malt in the background. The taste was also very pleasant with a lot of hop character, citrus hints, and a lot of malt. The maltiness of this beer made you keep wanting more! I would not say that this is better than Hopslam, but would definitely be a contender. Very tasty!

Shared with General66 and Illini08 waiting in line at Dark Lord Day. Poured amber with a white and foamy head. Aroma consisted of hops, pine, banana, grapefruit, and some malt. The palate was very crisp; nothing too overpowering but not bland as well. I compared the texture and bitterness to the Bells Hopslam without as much floral tones. Great balance and good Double IPA.

Bottle (Feb 2008. Batch 7) from Sam’s Quick Shop. Pours dark amber colored with a medium sized head and light lacing. Strong piney hop aroma with a slight sweet background. Taste is citrus and pine hopes with a very sweet malt backbone. Malt overpowers a bit. Complex, not necessarily in a good way.

Pours amber with a thin white head. Smells of pine resin and citrus. Tastes dry and bitter with a resiny finish. Not much balance in this beer.

A slightly hazy dark orange-red beer with a huge orange head. Wonderful! Piney hops. Very clean mouthfeel and creamy smooooth.

On tap at the Flying Saucer Addison. Wonderful fresh hop, floral nose. Poured cloudy dark gold-just a nice looking beer. Taste is very alcolholic, with a strong hop presence. The hops are emphasized but don’t overwhelm the drinkability of this beer. Smooth body with moderate carbonation. This is not a traditional Houston summer beer-that’s for sure. I like this one.
