Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, - "great" and rajan - "king". Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. This newest Avery Dictator completes the "Dictator Series" joining the likes of The Kaiser & The Czar. Be aware that The Maharaja is a limited release only available for the summer. Welcome to his kingdom!

Editor's Note: the 2007 version was 9.78%.

Smells like hops, tastes like hops. What else CAN I say? Slight smoky aroma and woody flavor, but above all else, massive IBUs! Malts create a smooth and hearty backdrop for what can only be described as ludicrous bitterness.

Pours an orange amber with little white head. Smells of mango, some apricot and a little garbage. Big mango taste with pumpkin. Great palate with nice bittering finish. mmmmm thanks pepsican

22ozz bomber. Pours a cloudy amber with a thin off-white head which dissipated quickly. Nose was pine and citrus with sweet malt to balance. Taste was the same as the nose. Mouthfeel was creamy and sweet with a very hoppy bitter bite. Nice for Avery.

The bottle poured like honey with fluffy orange hued head. Aroma of sweet oranges and earhy hops, intense fruity sugar. The flavor is sweet as well, sweetness very level with IPA hops. It’s very good, and balanced in it’s overall intensity, with a bitterness approaching anesthetic. Very nice.

This was a very drinkable beer for 102 IBUs. Strong aroma with a good citrus hop flavor. Sweet with some malt coming through. Lingers a while.

On draft. Pours dark copper gold with a finger’s frothy white head. Nose is citrus and grass; mouthfeel has some creaminess from the use of malts (which also deepen the color a bit), but the hops dominate through the lingering bitter finish. A very drinkable, tasty IIPA I don’t think I’d get tired of.

Pours a hazy dark amber body with a nice creamy, frothy head that left excellent lacing. The aroma is a strong balance of citrus and pine. On the palate, it definitely has a bite to it, and at times a bit too strong. It finishes a little dry with a plenty of bitter. Smooth and full-bodied. Definitely don’t notice the alcohol here, which I say is a bit impressive. Pretty good, but just lacking in complexities.
