Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, - "great" and rajan - "king". Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. This newest Avery Dictator completes the "Dictator Series" joining the likes of The Kaiser & The Czar. Be aware that The Maharaja is a limited release only available for the summer. Welcome to his kingdom!

Editor's Note: the 2007 version was 9.78%.

Wow, this is like drinking pure hop juice squeezed into a glass. I realize this is al about the hops, but it is almost balanced, in my opinion it could use just a bit of a stronger malt backbone. The hops are quite delightful in this beer. Nectarish and creamy, with all the grapefruit and citrus fruits, slightly sharp and bitter in the finish, but enjoyable.

750ml bottle. Pours a clear copper color with a good white head and good carbonation. Aroma is sweet, with an aroma of dry hops along with some subtle hints of honey and floral notes. Body is full and malty for an IPA, with a taste that’s delightfully full of hoppiness and pleasantly bitter on the finish, but not overwhelming in any respect. In the crowded field of ridiculously hopped IPAs, here’s a balanced but bold one.

Glorious notes of sesame, pear, and orange predominate, with a brilliantly golden amber hue. Flavor itself is intense, with hints of cedar and almond and a long, sweet, slightly bitter finish. Profoundly vibrant, it has a somewhat boozy bite to even out the fruit and hops. Would be a wonderful pair to a sharp and nutty cheddar.

Smells like hops, tastes like hops. What else CAN I say? Slight smoky aroma and woody flavor, but above all else, massive IBUs! Malts create a smooth and hearty backdrop for what can only be described as ludicrous bitterness.

22ozz bomber. Pours a cloudy amber with a thin off-white head which dissipated quickly. Nose was pine and citrus with sweet malt to balance. Taste was the same as the nose. Mouthfeel was creamy and sweet with a very hoppy bitter bite. Nice for Avery.

The bottle poured like honey with fluffy orange hued head. Aroma of sweet oranges and earhy hops, intense fruity sugar. The flavor is sweet as well, sweetness very level with IPA hops. It’s very good, and balanced in it’s overall intensity, with a bitterness approaching anesthetic. Very nice.
