Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, - "great" and rajan - "king". Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. This newest Avery Dictator completes the "Dictator Series" joining the likes of The Kaiser & The Czar. Be aware that The Maharaja is a limited release only available for the summer. Welcome to his kingdom!

Editor's Note: the 2007 version was 9.78%.

This was a very drinkable beer for 102 IBUs. Strong aroma with a good citrus hop flavor. Sweet with some malt coming through. Lingers a while.

On draft. Pours dark copper gold with a finger’s frothy white head. Nose is citrus and grass; mouthfeel has some creaminess from the use of malts (which also deepen the color a bit), but the hops dominate through the lingering bitter finish. A very drinkable, tasty IIPA I don’t think I’d get tired of.

Pours a hazy dark amber body with a nice creamy, frothy head that left excellent lacing. The aroma is a strong balance of citrus and pine. On the palate, it definitely has a bite to it, and at times a bit too strong. It finishes a little dry with a plenty of bitter. Smooth and full-bodied. Definitely don’t notice the alcohol here, which I say is a bit impressive. Pretty good, but just lacking in complexities.

Pours a classic reddish gold with a, big billowy off-white head that leaves some fat lacing on the sides of the glass. The aroma is pretty intense - lots of very direct hops, mostly floral and tangy citrus. Some malt sweetness comes through and compliments the floral notes nicely. The flavor is equally intense - a green, peppery hop flavor hits the tongue immediately and trails off into a tingly, slightly alcoholic finish. There is some malt sweetness there too, but it can’t do much to hide the intense hop flavors. The mouthfeel is thick, sticky and creamy and is really great for the style. I’m very impressed with this one. One of the best, but most intense, double IPAs I’ve ever tasted.

I loved this one, very hoppy and has a real thick body. High ABV can be tasted, but its not overly evident. Very nice level of hoppage, any more and it would start taking on sweet syrupy flavors.

Bottle of the 10.54% version. A murky orange brown color with an off-white head. An intensely strong hop aroma that seems to overwhelm almost all others, but I could also find some pine, citrus, grapefruit and honey. Robust, full bodied, and with a liquid hop consistency. A sweet caramel finish. I love big hoppy beers, so this one goes down well, but I will admit that it lacks complexity.

Batch 7 - Pure citrus smell wafting from the bottle and throughout the pour. Amberish Copper color, minimal head. Very floral, very biting, very balanced. I like this, a lot. Batch 9 - A lot danker, and a lot more hoppy than I remember. Kind of sweet taste on the tongue.

Pours a slightly hazy medium amber with a half inch of off-white head. Sweat orange, peachy, citrus, and hop aroma. Very floral/plant-like. Creamy body with a nice fruity/flowery flavor almost peachy at first. It’s a semi-sharp sweetness with a harsh transition to a heavy bitter hop finish. Still tasty though and it hides it’s alcohol extremely well.
