BillKismet (1898), Seattle, Washington, USA Apr 5, 2008 Hazy tangerine color with luscious cream head. Passionfruity aroma joined by grapefruit with a dryness to the air. Excellent hoppiness to the body and one of the most estery, frutier IPA’s I have tasted to tate. Full of passionfruit, grapefruit and pineapple followed by the late appearance of peach. Dry, parching body that detracts to an extent. Defintely on the sweet side, but falls short of cloying. Super fruity, with smooth, clean bitterness. This one definitely throws some hefty hop punches. texasbartender (160), Sugarland, Texas, USA Apr 5, 2008 This beer is big. When they say Imperial IPA they are not joking. It is the biggest and boldest IPA I have had yet. ironchefscott (341), portland, Oregon, USA Apr 4, 2008 a darn good IIPA
smells like great grapefruit.....tastes like it but with a bitter background lots...not overly bitter as most good IIPA should be...as in balanced by the malt
the mouthfeels is a bit sticky and oily......
good stuff smith4498 (825), Miami, Florida, USA Apr 4, 2008 Pours cloudy orange with big off white head. Strong aromas of grapefruit and pine. This beer is all about the hops. Flavor is over the top grapefruit. It is sweet initially with a bitter finish and a slight alcohol taste. Decent, but too grapefruity for me. Medium body, average carbonation and oily, sticky mouthfeel. McCracken (14), San Francisco, California, USA Apr 3, 2008 A hop-bomb to say the least. Appearance is a slightly cloudy amber, with a nice creamy white head. Some double IPAs increase crystal malts to balance the high hopping rates, but this one just increases base malt; this pevents it from being too sweet and really puts the focus on the hops. The aroma is like raw hops, unadulterated, dank and a touch citrusy/lemony/fruity. Start to finish, the flavor is an intense hoppiness of the prior description. Bitterness is high, though doesn’t finish biting or astringent thanks to the hefty malt bill. Although the malt is definitely there, it’s not overwhelming as one would imagine in an 11%abv beer. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Very little alcohol warmth; also very decieving. Finishes dry with a nice soft hoppy finish. This is a great beer, though I’d like it to present it’s maltiness with a little more authority. Might be good to pop in a bit of specialty malt, lower the flavor and/or aroma hops a bit or just let age for 6 mos or more. Though all of these recommendations might prevent it from being an Imperial IPA and turn it into an American Barleywine. Regardless, this could be really fabulous with some age on it. rodgers004 (26), Silver Spring, Maryland, USA Apr 2, 2008 Updated: Apr 7, 2008Batch 7 Feb 2008- Fantastic start to finish. Pours clear golden amber, with beautiful thick head. This IPA sticks to the tounge with a remarkably complex flavor. Could be the best Double IPA I’ve had. norsedoc (162), USA Apr 1, 2008 On tap at Falling Rock during the Pursuit of Hoppiness gathering. The rep told me it would knock off my taste buds, and I would agree. Aroma is overpowering with the hops. My friend thought the aroma bordered on lawn clippings. Beer was hazy orange. Very big, but the alcohol didn’t blast you. Dry finish. Great beer for the hophead. stefanje (937), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA Apr 1, 2008 Updated: Mar 20, 2009650 ml bottle from Bevmo. Pours a copper color with a big white head. Good nose with citrus; oranges, limes and grapefruit. The flavor is dominated by biter hops, this is a hop monster; the citrus flavors and some caramel found out the sides. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. The finish is long with lingering caramel and a touch of biter bite. overall: A great DIPA. Rerate note. more emphasis on caramel, still very nice quaff.
