Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, - "great" and rajan - "king". Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. This newest Avery Dictator completes the "Dictator Series" joining the likes of The Kaiser & The Czar. Be aware that The Maharaja is a limited release only available for the summer. Welcome to his kingdom!

Editor's Note: the 2007 version was 9.78%.

Oh wow. Glowing orange color with a medium to large sized fizzy off white head. Nose is cannabis, peaches, hops, and a bit of sweetness. Mouthfeel is ultra soft and the finish does not have the hard bite of most IIPAS. Very nice warming bitter finish. Great DIPA. Alcohol content is almost phantom. Only draw back is that the taste is somewhat muted.

Batch 7, listed at 10.54% abv. Aroma is heavy on floral hops, maybe with a tad bit of cinnamon or other spices. Large, creamy, off-white head with really excellent lacing. Slightly hazy, amber body. Taste is the biggest disappointment of this beer, extremely bitter finish. Very one sided, and way over hopped with no balance at all. Mouthfeel is creamy, lively bubbles, and the alcohol is extremely well hidden.

Re-rate. Batch 9 (Feb 2009), consumed 3/24/09. Pours with a large, creamy off-white head over a hazed sunrise hued body. Aroma is very fresh, citrus and marajuana like hops with a bit of time too. C hops and Warrior if I had to guess (maybe a touch of Simcoe). Quite dank. Hop Bomb. Taste is spicy and herbal hops with a bit of caramel. This stuff is quite good fresh. A bit over carbonated for my liking.

Flaske.

Bottle. Pours clean, thin white head that disperses quickly. Nice clear bronze color, little opacity. Nice strong hop aroma, nice pleasingly hoppy taste, nice full body. Carries the alcohol very well.

Huge pine and resiny nose. Orange with deep amber tones and slightly hazy. Thick foamy head. Great marriage of flavors, huge malty sweetness, the aroma and bitterness explodes right away to balance it off. Thick body with the alcohol and bitterness cutting through it all for a long smooth finish. Excellent Imperial IPA, seems this will age nicely too.

22oz. Bottle Big hop and floral bouquet. Quite a lot of carbonation. Hops flavor right through to to finish. I think I picked out some cantaloupe in it as well. Fairly bitter, but hides it’s 10.5% very well.

Bottle. Somewhat hazy amber pour with a thin head. Aroma is floral and citrusy with a strong grapefruit smell, as well as a sweet malt presence. I love the smell of this beer. Strong hop flavor, pretty bitter, though not overbearing. You can definitely taste the 10.54%, but its still really drinkable. Pretty thick body. Malty and carbonated mouthfeel. Just an outstanding IIPA!
