HoosBrews (11), North Carolina, USA Jul 27, 2009 Appearance is a hazy orange with a creamy head and good lacing. Smell is a huge citrus-hoppy treat. The taste is even bigger than the nose. Initial bitterness followed by a full mouth of grapefruity hops. The malt is very well balanced with this insane amount of hops. Although this is a very rich beer, its incredibly drinkable for over 10% abv.
This is a top tier imperial IPA. I’ve had this on tap as well and it’s even better in draft. kenb (1100), Oregon, USA Jul 26, 2009 22 oz bottle via LS. Pours a near clear copper with a huge beige head. Nose is A mixture of hops...orange, grapefruit, apricot, pine. Tastes has about every hop flavor you can imagine, so instead of listing them all, i will just say i do not taste any harsh ’rind’ flavors, the rest are all there. Also is a bit warm..not hot..but quite warm. Very full body, not quite syrupy but full, resiny. Lots of hops on a heavy nalt backbone. Carbonation is just right. Wish i had a fresh bottle of this, as it was bottled February 2009 and this is late july...5 months later is still good..but not real fresh..more like a hoppy barleywine now... boamr (112), Pennsylvania, USA Jul 23, 2009 Bottle thanks to richlikebeer. Pours a bit of an orange color with a nicwe amount of white head. Really good lacing in the glass. Taste a bit like a pear and mango. Not much of a bitter hop taste to it. Overall a great beer. phaleslu (428), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Jul 23, 2009 Updated: Jul 24, 2009Draft at Grammer’s in Cincinnati. Apparently this one isn’t very common on tap, especially in this neck of the woods. Pours gold/amber with a medium off white head. Best aroma I’ve ever experienced from an IPA, with hops, floral notes, citrus, malt, and spices. The outstanding aroma is a road map for the beer, as flavors of hops, malt, citrus, spice come through, with maybe some alcohol and pine. Packs a real wallop for an IPA and earns that ’Imperial’ tag but alcohol does not overwhelm the rewarding complexity. obguthr (987), Poquoson, Virginia, USA Jul 22, 2009 Updated: Jul 25, 2009Draft: Caramel and thistle aroma. Amber color, medium head, good lacing. Chewy mouthfeel. Orange and mango flavor. Fabulous thistle and rose hip finish. One of Avery’s best beers, IMHO. shigadeyo (2210), Harrison, Ohio, USA Jul 21, 2009 7/18/2009: Avery Maharaja has been and always will be a great Imperial Pale Ale. There is no denying the wonderfully balanced caramel maltiness and bright, citrusy and pine/resin hoppiness of this beer. It has a generous level of bitterness and its high level of alcohol is completely invisible in the flavor. It has a thicker body than initially expected, but it still slides down vey easily and dangerously fast. Maharaja is another great IIPA that would easily be sessionable albeit for the 10%+ ABV!
Draught sample(s) at the 14th Annual Indiana Microbrewers Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana. Rating #1163 for this beer.
pete4999 (121), Buffalo, New York, USA Jul 18, 2009 Bottle from Feb 2009. Pours tangerine/brown, nice lacing and bubbling, small white head. Smells like beer. Some citrus fruit as well. Taste is good, hoppy, citrus/piney. Definitely do not taste the 10.5% ABV. Nice on the palate. Not sure what to write - this is a very, very good beer. thorongil2 (54), , Ontario, Canada Jul 18, 2009 (bottle Feb 2009) light lychee and bergamot aroma; very light yellow head; burnt tangerine or shellac colour; flavour of hops; long bitter finish
