There is no denying the wonderfully balanced caramel maltiness and bright, citrusy and pine/resin hoppiness of this beer. It has a generous level of bitterness and its high level of alcohol is completely invisible in the flavor. It has a thicker body than initially expected, but it still slides down vey easily and dangerously fast. Maharaja is another great IIPA that would easily be sessionable albeit for the 10%+ ABV!
Draught sample(s) at the 14th Annual Indiana Microbrewers Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana. Rating #1163 for this beer.

Smells like beer. Some citrus fruit as well. Taste is good, hoppy, citrus/piney. Definitely do not taste the 10.5% ABV. Nice on the palate. Not sure what to write - this is a very, very good beer. thorongil2 (56), , Ontario, Canada

| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Jul 17, 2009 Draft pours copper with a fluffy head. Ridiculous aroma. Pine, citrus, floral and earthiness. Nice balanced body of sweet caramel and malt. It goes nicely with the bitterness. What a DIPA should taste like. CUJO (339), Brooklyn, New York, USA

Could not get a great read on the aroma but there was definitely some earthiness along with the expected hops. Taste is a kick in the jaw, alcohol is immediately available, however there is a nice balance in the hops and sugars. After a few sips I could taste some more depth through the sugars, possibly fruits/ florals. Hopper (302), San Antonio, Texas, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 15, 2009 June 2009 batch-An unclear Caramel color beer with little head. Aroma of fruit, apricot, peach, & mint interestingly. Taste was fruity, bitter, mint, & medicinal herbs. The alcohol is well hidden.( I had the Feb. 2009 batch & was very different. The Feb. batch was so grassy it was like opening up a field of freshly cut grass in a bottlle-I enjoyed the Feb. batch better) Slipstream (746), USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 13, 2009 Updated: Jul 17, 2009Another cool, entertaining label from Avery. Big, foamy head and lacing. Avery usually gives a good head. It looks great. Rich malt and pine hop aroma with a touch of yeast. Despite the foam, it is not fizzy at all, but smooth along the palate. The flavor is mostly dry, piney hops, but with plenty of sweet malts. Alcohol and a touch of cheese are present too. It is a tad rough for me. Maharaja is not the best IIPA or the best thing from this excellent brewery, but it is still very good. nerdrocker101 (102), Atlanta, Georgia, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 13, 2009 Bottle. Appearance: Pours out a clear golden with a moderately foamy off-white head. Aroma: Smells hoppy of course. Citrus and floral notes flood the nose, a sign of good things to come. Flavor: The hops give a nice spicy bite up front. Notes of grapefruit and resiny pine. It finishes a bit on the earthy side. Palate: Medium bodied and the alcohol is well masked. Definitely a must for the hop heads.
