Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, - "great" and rajan - "king". Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. This newest Avery Dictator completes the "Dictator Series" joining the likes of The Kaiser & The Czar. Be aware that The Maharaja is a limited release only available for the summer. Welcome to his kingdom!

Editor's Note: the 2007 version was 9.78%.

22 oz. bomber poured out the color of a 10 year old penny with a large, wicked-rocky, off-white head that lasted and left a good lace. Big hop aromas, all grapefruit, with moderate amounts of cookie and caramel malts. Flavor... oh, MY! Not just the hop-wallop I expected, but high amounts of malted sweetness to boot. Ends long with heavy bitterness, and goes down syrupy with a burning spice character. This is a powerful advesary to Dogfish Head 90. If I were Christ, I would not let this bottle end.

this beer grew on me. Bottle courtesy of mar. Pours copper/ruby reddish color, thick foam head. Aroma of hops, pine and grass. Good sharp hoppy flavor but not overpowering or puckering. I prefer not to be run over by hops and this beer didn’t. Good brew.

Tasted 10.54 version on draft. Very nice and good tasting beer, well ballanced, very hoppy and a good bitter taste makes this a better beer

Bottle. Pours a medium copper with a slight head. The head goes quickly, with little lacing. The upfront is kind of sweet with some alchohol flavors. Not hoppy enough for me, although finishes clean and dry. More hops would have gave it better balance and I think an overall better beer. I will try again and hope for better results.

Taster at The Mondial de la biere 08 in Montreal. The color is amber with a beige head. The aroma and taste is of hops. The taste is also of citrus fruits and again more hops, the finish is the bitter taste of a good double I.P.A.

Okay, after waiting awhile to try this one, I finally got my chance and the batch tasted terrible! Must have been the bottom of the barrel or just a bad bottle; but I had to give it another chance. Honestly, I was expecting a mighty powerful hop-bomb and what I got was a bit more pleasant and less assaulting than what I was expecting...which was somewhat of a disappointment, I suppose. Smell was floral and hoppy, but muted. Mouthfeel was really nice, smooth, clean, and balanced...not nearly as heavy or sweet as I had imagined. Some fruity flavours in here as well: raisin, plum, peach, apricot. The hops were certainly felt, but not overpowering the mix. Again with the finish; bitter, but not overly so. I was hoping for a hop-fest here so I felt a little cheated, but then again, I was pleased with the balance of this beer. By the way, I think this was batch 38. Something tells me that original batches of this might have been more insane.
