Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, - "great" and rajan - "king". Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. This newest Avery Dictator completes the "Dictator Series" joining the likes of The Kaiser & The Czar. Be aware that The Maharaja is a limited release only available for the summer. Welcome to his kingdom!

Editor's Note: the 2007 version was 9.78%.

Amebr body with nice frothy head. Aroma is grapefruit and lemon with some spruce and hops. Flavour is rich and full of malts and hops with a pine presence. Finishes with a nice rich bitterness.

22 oz. bottle from Lukas, OP, Kansas. Pour is cloudy orange - amber with a medium white head. Some nice settling as it poured. Aroma is citrus (mostly grapefruit) and some caramel malt shining through. The taste is initially citrus hops that gave way to a nice syrupy sweet malt backbone and ended with a nice bitter hop finish. A bit of resin in the taste ass well. Overall a really nice, balanced DIPA. I had this paired with a triple Gloucester cheese. Fantastic pairing!

Pours a two finger cream head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Hazy amber color. Grapefruit nose. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Flavor is almost sweet grapefruit, some malts in background, lingering grapefruit aftertaste. Higher ABV is hidden. Decent DIPA. Bottled Jun 2009. $7.99 for a 22oz bottle from Manchester Wine and Liquors Manchester, CT.

From a 22 oz bottle that is labled Brewed in May 2007, Batch 6, this poured a very clear and rich copper color with a small off-white head and moderate lacing. Big nose of piney hops with a touch of caramel and grapefruit. Rich and syrupy mouthfeel and lot of flavors with caramel malts leading the way, followed by floral hops. The description above says 112 IBUs but this bottle says 102, so they must have tamed it down a bit. Even then this does not taste that bitter, and hides the alcohol well (until you have finished the entire bottle that is). Good long bitter finish. Delish.

Medium sized beige head with excellent retention and a healthy lace. Clear, deep copper visuals. Nose is fruity, spicey, citrus infused. Med/full body, lightly resiny. Full, spicey hop flavors dominate, earthy and flowery, big but gentle at the same time. Crystal and pale malts play quietly in the background but are well represented no matter. Alcohol is well dispersed in the mix. A surprisingly crisp DIPA! Finish is medium dry and fruity. A nice enough DIPA though not as agressive as i expected.

Clear amber pour with good tan head. Does this have simcoe in it? Piney Hop aroma. Amarillo hop flavor with some citrus orange in the aftertaste. medium mouthfeel. Solid brew. Great job of masking the abv entirely.

NorCal tasting July 07 - At first, I honestly thought I was going to bomb this beer. The first thing that hit me about the nose of the beer was that it reminded me of Clamato. How or why I have no idea. But it did. So I set it aside and let it breathe a bit, warmed up a tad and then it really came out. A nice juicy, citrusy hop character with a soft, sweet caramel nose that kept it sweet but not overpowering. Color was a reddish orange, hazy with a thin head. The hops in this one is something to enjoy. Sometimes these type of beers can be ragged or harsh and can be a chore to drink an entire 22oz bottle. But this was excellent and one of the better ones available. A sweet fruity taste balanced nicely by the hop blast. Highly recommended.
