4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Release no.18 2014. Medium amber pour with a slight ruby cast. Excellent head and good lacing retention. Nice complex nose of citrus (grapefruit, mango, orange) and spruce hops over a rich caramel background. Almost full bodied with a creamy texture and a slightly above normal carbonation level that has a bit of effervescence on the finish. The flavor profile is complex, but a bit unbalanced due to the alcohol content bite. It begins with the hop flavors of the nose, flows to a rich caramel sweetness which is accompanied by a medium well rounded bitterness. It progresses to the finish where alcohol predominates over a residual sweetness, leaving an alcohol burn on the tongue and back of the throat. While outstanding, it could be improved by reducing the alcohol content a percent or two to achieve better balance.

Above average in every aspect. Great dark orange coclor with slight haze. Avery does such great beers. Citrus/tropical nose , pours small head. Juicy dipa, not big on malts, pretty hoppy but roubded well balanced finish. Very nice imperial ipa. Not disappointing at all.

Originally rated on 8/28/08.Bottled may 08, batch#8’ Maharaja pours a deep orange- amber body, with almost no carbonation, a thin off white cap left fair amounts of lace. Aroma mostly floral, with some hints of pine. Flavors of caramel sweet malts and citrus hops were nicely balanced, despite being over 10% a.b.v the alcohol was hidden well. Mouthfeel was creamy and smooth. I think i might go buy a few more of these.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20

Been well over a year since I’ve had this. Got it in fairly fresh today so I gave it a go. Clear, syrup copper with voluminous head with many different sized bubbles. Nose of ripe apricot nectar, gently toasted malt mingling with young pine, biscuit, and honey. Flavor is deeply juicy and sweet, delicate notes of pine and herb, but overall the malt is a bit too sweet for my liking. Sweetness complicates the linger, but still a nice full-flavored offering. My palate has definitely changed since last year!

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Almost translucent marmalade in color, small but whispy off white head. Lots of citrus on the nose, oranges and grapefruit, nice pine and floral counterparts. Initial mouthful was lovely, sweeter citrus than on the nose, wonderfully balanced with the hop bitterness. Not as piney as I expected it to be...nice notes of sweet honey in there. Good work here Avery.

A lot of Imperial IPA’s have come and gone through the years. Maharaja is one with staying power. Why has this one managed to stick around even as other greats have been retired or reworked to make way for new hoppy brews? Balance has a lot to do with it. Aroma’s got dank, citrusy, and floral hops but also biscuit malt. It’s the same with the flavor. There’s a juicy, tropical hop bill yet the bitterness is reined in by the malt. Finish is crisp and dry. It demands another sip.
