Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, - "great" and rajan - "king". Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. This newest Avery Dictator completes the "Dictator Series" joining the likes of The Kaiser & The Czar. Be aware that The Maharaja is a limited release only available for the summer. Welcome to his kingdom!

Editor's Note: the 2007 version was 9.78%.

Purs hazy orange-golden with a large head. Sweet hops in the nose. Great flavors with notes of lime, grapefruit and sweet caramel. Finishes with a nice touch of bitterness and a bit of alcohol. Good stuff.

I tried this twice before rating and I’ve got another bottle to try, so I just might add some more notes later. Copper golden body, big head, slippery lacing. Aroma is hoppy with a lot of sweet fruit. Palate is smoooooth. Taste is almost tropical - melon, cantaloupe, apricot, grapefruit (bitterness of the rind included - thanks!) When tasted too cold - the finish had a srong alcoholic edge to it. Served warm, the alcohol was only slightly there. This is pretty good, I’m going to try it again.

This beer poured with a big, frothy cream colored head resting like a turban atop the clear, coppery amber hued liquid. The huge hop nose was sharp and prominent, with notes of pineapple, grapefruit and pine needles. The nose gave fair warning about the scope of the hops in this beer. Flavors of pine needles, candied grapefruit rind, apple sauce, all riding on a malt backbone stong enough for an Indian elephant. This has great balance for such a big beer. There is a long lingering grapefruit bitterness in the finish. The alcohol comes out in the nose as it warms. Very thick, dry mouthfeel. I got more thirsty the more I drank. My little sister said it tasted like drinking a flower. When I finished the one bottle, the others were just begging to be opened. This is what I think of as an IIPA.

Hoppy fresh aroma with some faint off notes. Doesn’t smell like 122 IBUs. Also doesn’t taste like 122 IBUs either. Amber in body, hazy with large off-white head; good visible carbonation. Excellent lace. Very nice creamy mouthfeel. Lots of IBUs. The 9.7% ABV is too high for a session brew, but taste-wise, it’s right there. Doesn’t taste that strong, either in ABV or in IBUs. A great IIPA.

A copper color with a large white head. The aroma is very citrusy and floral. The taste is creamy with citrus mainly orange peel. It has a certain grassy quality to it as well. Overall this is a very good beer. Avery rocks!

Bottled February 06 and its batch 3. I enjoyed it June 06. It’s a dark amber beer, with a very nice, creamy and golden head. The aroma has a lot of aroma hops, that gives notes of citrus, peach, mango and other fruits. The flavour is complex, and the alcohol is not present in it. The notes are aroma hops, peach, mango, pine needles, caramel and the bitterness is nice, but not as dominant as expected in an Imperial IPA. Even so, it’s a truly nice one, and it can make my hands clap....

(Bottle) Pours deep red/orange with medium sized creamy off white head. Nose is dominated by hops and reveals traces of haye, citrus fruits, pine and new cut grass. Taste follows the nose well, and the beer explodes with massive hoppy bitterness in the mouth. The 112 IBU’s really bites, but in a VERY VERY plesant way!!</br> One of the very best IIPA’s I’ve ever tasted.. :-)
