Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, - "great" and rajan - "king". Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. This newest Avery Dictator completes the "Dictator Series" joining the likes of The Kaiser & The Czar. Be aware that The Maharaja is a limited release only available for the summer. Welcome to his kingdom!

Editor's Note: the 2007 version was 9.78%.

On tap at The Brass Rail. Clear copper topped by a lasting creamy white head. Smell and flavor are both big & beautiful loads of hops. Pine, citrus, mango, and caramel. Very resinous. Long lasting deeply bitter finish. Easily the best beer I have had from Avery.

On tap at International Beer Garten (Lutz, FL). Wow! This one really packs in the hops! The beer pours a clear copper color with a medium sized white head. The lacing just clings and lingers on the side of the glass. The aroma is dominated by grapefruit/citrus hops with a nice blend of malt as well. The flavor is more of the same with an excellent mixture of malt and hops, although the hops take center stage. Excellent bitter finish!

Had on Tap at Hamilton;s tavern. Pours a deep, clear orange with a creamy beige head. The aroma is a big grapefruit front with other citrus notes and a light caramel malt in the background. Medium-bodied and creamy/slick it finishes with a nice bitter end. Round, sweet caramel malts with a solid citric hop backing. Nice lingering bitterness at the back and sides of the tongue. I started drinking this just a bit too cool, but as it warmed, it became much smoother and better balanced than my initial impression. Perhaps it’s not as refined as say a YuleSmith or 90 Minute, but it is very tasty. The aroma is probably the closest that I’ve ever smelled to an actual grapefruit. All and all a very incredible IIPA!

Bottle. Pours clean, thin white head that disperses quickly. Nice clear bronze color, little opacity. Nice strong hop aroma, nice pleasingly hoppy taste, nice full body. Carries the alcohol very well.

Pours a cloudy, hazy orange. Massive head. My first embarrassing spill over in ages using a gently pour. Had to let it rest before decanting the remainder of the bottle. Very piny nose. Hints of spicy and citrus hops, but dominant pine. Very oily aroma. Exceptionally smooth malt flavor. Dry finish. Bitterness is surprisingly subtle. Hides until well after the swallow, and even then still comparatively mild. Very strong carbonation, but man does this beer really benefit from it. Creamy mouth feel that coats the mouth. This is a fantastic beer. All of the hop presence is in the flavor instead of the aroma. A rare DIPA where you can taste the hops, not just the bitterness. Love it!

Out of a 22 oz bottle... Pours a clear carrot orange color. Pure white, bubbly head; fantastic. Icy lace at the top a the head shrinks -- which, incidentally, it takes its sweet time doing. The smell is sweet, flowery hops right off the bat. Heavy pine, then perfumey flower petals. Thick rye malts and sting of alcohol. Intense but really good. The taste is well-balanced between a roasted malt, flower-pine hops and a burning brandy-like alcoholic character on the way down. Really strong and with a major bite. Very good, especially with the balance of rye/caramel malts. The feel is creamy but buttery, oily and smooth. Really great on the palate; lessens the bite of the hops. This is one heavy beast of a beer. Really strong and really good.
