COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, - "great" and rajan - "king". Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. This newest Avery Dictator completes the "Dictator Series" joining the likes of The Kaiser & The Czar. Be aware that The Maharaja is a limited release only available for the summer. Welcome to his kingdom!

Editor’s Note: the 2007 version was 9.78%.

Poured a pale reddish orange with a thin dense head-- nice enough, but nothing to write home about. The nose is pungent with thick sweet hops--grapefruit citrus with a hint of pine, light malt, and a alcohol as it warmed. The palate is smooth and creamy, which seems unexpected in such a brash beer, for me, this was the highlight, along with the nose. The flavor is perhaps a bit too big, incredibly hoppy, with strong grapefruit and grassy notes. There’s some sweetness to this brew, but not a nicely rounded out maltiness, if you know what I mean. The herbal hoppy bitterness really lingers along with a touch of alcohol. Thsi wasn’t a bad beer, but I do feel it was somewhat overhyped. More malty richness with less of that cloying sweetness would have made this on par with DFH 90 minute.

Bottle. Beautiful orange amber color, clear. Light tan head that dissipates slowly. The nose has alcohol a little caramel and a hint of banana. The taste is moderately bitter with a resinous earthy taste and forward alcohol. It’s warming and a fantastic beer.

On tap in a snifter. Pours a very clear orange-amber with a small white head that eventually fades. Very minimal lacing on the glass. Aroma is sweet with some pineapple notes. Taste is hoppy up front but fades into a pineapple-y sweetness. Some notes of the alcohol are also noted. Average carbonation that leaves a slight tingle on the tongue. Good beer overall. Drink slowly because it definitely packs a punch.

Has an orange amber color and a cream colored head that dissipates quickly. I smell lots of citrus fruits and sweetness. I taste "hops" , pine cones, grapefruits and tartness. Nice hoppy beer....

Bottle. This is a gorgeous beer in a very attractive bottle. The flavors are powerful, but the alcohol bite was a tad bit overwhelming at times. Still wasn't enough of a problem to keep this from being a fantastic beer.

Orange amber hue with creamy egg shell white diminishing head, juicy tangerine and some honey smell sweetness, taste has a little caramel for sweetness, juicy-syrup texture, minimal carbonation, piney, resin and citrusy hop flavor, not bitter that for 102 IBUs. Drinkable but surely creeps for its strength, expected a bit more, hops mostly juice tangerine

Pours a nice clear orange hold. The hop aroma is huge with piney resinous hops and delicious citrus notes. On the palate there is juicy orange and grapefruit sweetness that's balanced out by a sharp bitter hop note. Solid DIPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

This is probably a fantastic IPA if you love or even like grapefruit. I personally hate grapefruit, which made this a bit harder to fully enjoy. Absolutely beautiful appearance, cloudy golden orange with delicate lacing. Aroma of grapefruit, lemon and hops, which perfectly reflects the flavors as well. Very forward hops, with distinct grapefruit throughout. It's a very good beer, just not for me. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
