Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, - "great" and rajan - "king". Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. This newest Avery Dictator completes the "Dictator Series" joining the likes of The Kaiser & The Czar. Be aware that The Maharaja is a limited release only available for the summer. Welcome to his kingdom!

Editor's Note: the 2007 version was 9.78%.

February 2008 Bottle, Batch 7. Pours a translucent golden orange with a pale head and some really nice lacing. The aroma is very, very piney with lots of grapefruit and sweet pear. Much like the aroma, there is a lot of pine in the flavour as well. A well rounded caramel sweetness lingers in the back with the more subtle pear notes. Grapefruit is very up front almost right next to the pine. Towards the finish, the sweetness surprisingly lingers around for a little while, slowly becoming overpowered by the bitterness. Pear lingers on alongside with the sweetness and fades around the same time. Grapefruit and pine lasts a little longer before straight up bitterness just outlasts everything else. Mmm, delicious.

Sampled at EBF08. Cloudy, deep golden. SMall tan head. Sweet and malty with loads of flowery hop. Some toffee with a dry, grassy bitterness.
