Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, - "great" and rajan - "king". Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. This newest Avery Dictator completes the "Dictator Series" joining the likes of The Kaiser & The Czar. Be aware that The Maharaja is a limited release only available for the summer. Welcome to his kingdom!

Editor's Note: the 2007 version was 9.78%.

Bomber shared at Xmas gathering. Pours orange/red with rimming white head. Grapefruit and resin nose with sugary caramel notes, slight almond/nutty character. Taste is alcohol hot with lots of caramel backbone and decent bitter. Nice grapefruit hop flavor and rather dry. Tasty IIPA.

Pours thick gold. Slightly cloudy but I can see through it. Very, very sticky head. Really clings to the glass. Smells of alcohol, hops, and rich malt right off the bat. Really creamy, rich mouthfeel. It’s a big boy beer. Notes of grapefruit, citrus, honey, spices, herbs, fresh gentle pine. Liquorish? Meal in a glass.

This is a barely wine, not an IPA. Hops is nowhere comparable to the syrupy maltiness; which, at halfway through the beer, I could not longer choke down. Drainpour.

22 oz. bottle- Pours cloudy golden with a dissipating head, aroma is of malt and alcohol. I was really hoping for a big hoppy brew, and was let down, malt, malt, malt. It is complex and interesting but I really want a big ass IPA with mega hops, this did not deliver!

Pours a beautiful cloudy copper color. Aroma of Cedar, molasses, cherries, and floral hops. Taste is sweet and bitter. Flavors are strong and wonderful. Cedar, floral hops, sweet molasses malt. Very well balanced and quite a nice brew.

Pours slightly hazy orange with a thick frothy beige head. Aroma of pine, orange, dank hops, sweet malt. Taste is bitter, piney hops with a huge malt body. Hops are quite bold and resinous but the body is equally as large and present. I think this is a great DIPA because it doesn’t have too much of that sweet citrusy hop like so many have now. Alcohol is slightly noticeable but blends well with all the other flavors. Medium lived bitter finish, lively but smooth carbonation. Slightly reminiscent of a heavily hopped barleywine. Batch 10, this bottle is 7 months old, which may have dulled some of the lighter citrus, but to me this is near perfect.

The pour is orange brown with an off-white sudsy/froth head that reminds you of pancake batter while on the griddel. This IPA has the smoothies finish of any that i had indulged in. Great beer leaves you anticipating the next taste.

Batch 90-- bottled in February, 2009. 102 IBU’s, 10.27 percent ABV. Super-piney. Resin, spruce, and citrus hops, and plenty to go around. Caramel and somewhat nutty malt. Medium sweetness, heavy bitterness. Nice if you’re into that kind of thing, and now... I think I am.
