COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Bottle. Pours a clear ruby body with a small white head. Strange for a quad but still nice. In the aroma, something’s fishy right off the bat: strong tones of canned mackerel in tomato sauce (a popular bread spread in Norway which I also happen to dislike) comes forth and makes me exclaim an irreverent "what the HELL??", which probably would have made the venerated reverend slightly dismayed. But I can’t help it. This is bad. Only faint hints of malts and candy sugars linger in the back. I keep thinking positive: "it’s probably nullified by a grandiose taste once I get past the mackerel". I am wrong. This beer also TASTES tomato-sauced mackerel, accompanied by sweet syrupy notes which makes it even more sickening. Jesus Christ. This MUST be a bad bottle; I refuse to believe that even a big beer from Avery could have pulled off such a spectacular feat of "the emperor’s new clothes"... A fishy business indeed, will re-rate when I get the chance. BTW: bottle is from an unknown outlet of Swedish state-owned alcohol monopoly chain Systembolaget. Be warned.

pretty good as far as beers go, but not too great for a quad, especially for the price! try something else.

22oz bottle in a Trappist glass. Pours deep ruby/amber with a lacy, light beige head. Aroma of spicy yeast, sugar, some light notes of dark fruits, caramel, and floral hops. The alcohol is covered up really well. A sweet beer. Average texture. A good quad for an American brewer.

On tap at Avery and a bottle today. A strange brew. I taste the belgian yeast and so many other things. A bit sweet. A little tangy...like slightly soured fruit. Really minerally. Almost metallic or rusty. Not what I expected. Nice body. Just too sweet...thats my biggest complaint.

Draft at WOB. Served hazy orange with a small orange-cream head. Very sweet aroma with hop and caramel hints and heavy bits of yeast and alcohol. Flavor is heavy sweet with much the same with full fruits and spices. Light on the bitterness reminded me more of Barleywine than a Quad, but came strong with a sherry-like alcohol kick.
