bottle at brewtopia - I was expecting great things from this beer, but was a bit disappointed - quite barleywineish, in fact, I don’t detect a lot of belgian characteristics at all - lots of sugar ( a bit cloying actually) - tries hard at being balanced, but doesn’t quite make it - tasty to a point.

Draft. Pours amber orange with an off white head. Light Belgian yeasty aroma with a light sweetness. The flavor has Belgian yeast, toast, a light sweetness and light spicy notes. Not bad.

Bottle. Amber colour with a medium mostly lasting off white head. Rich aroma and taste of hops and malts with notes of fruits.

2003 vintage in the bomber bottle. Pours a mixture of purple, amber and red. Only a thin yellow-ish off-white head could be mustered up. This has a FANTASTIC aroma of caramels, BIG molasses, and stick candy. The flavors were quite medicinal, much like cough syrup, but moderated with the sweetness of hard candy. Bananas and lots of heat. The finish cannot subdue the big alcohol even though the beer is substantially thick. In my opinion, aging this beer for 5 years was a brilliant move on my part. If you are sitting on a bottle of this from 2003, drink up, my friend.

UPDATED: SEP 1, 2005 2003 bottle. Pours a deep orange-red, with some fiery golden hues. Much brighter and more colorful than its many belgian counterparts. Also much more clear, unfortunately. Good off-white head and a big aroma of crisp hops, lots of sweet candied sugar and a spicy yeast. Begins with so sweet a flavor it burns going down and I can only sip a bit at a time. Once I get past the initial shot of candi, there is some unusually bitter hops for the style, not citric or anything, but quite floral and more apparent than any other quad. Still, tastes quite clean and has an elegant yeast finish with chewy caramels, molasses, salty raisins and even some riper red fruits. Mouthfeel is peppery at first but has a buttery/creamy finish this is quite nice. I let this bottle sit out for 2 hours, and after returning to it, it was still highly carbonated. Good stuff, I just wish they wouldnt filter their beers so much. The huge sweetness is the biggest problem, but maybe this would even out better in a few years.7/4/7/3/12
2000 bottle, waxed top at XBF05 Very solid and drinkable it remains, with that big fiery fruit and alcohol burn, some acidity and plenty of candi sugar. The aging has added a nice note of oxidation and seems to have toned down some of the syrupiness and hops. I enjoyed it. 7/4/7/4/15

Bomber into an abbey glass. Pours murky brown mixed with blood orange with a small white head that settles into a small layer and ring quickly. The aroma reminds more of a Belgian brown than a quad, malty and rich. The flavor is a bit on the light side, oddly enough, and not quite complex enough. There is some ester, a fair amount of malt, and a dash of dust. High carbonation and a big mouthfeel.

Thanks to WhyBeNormal for sending this out in a BIF a ways back. Served in a Mikasa goblet.
Pours a clear garnet-copper color with a single-finger white head that falls quickly into a thick collar around the edges. A few bubbles on top as well. No real lacing. The nose brings forward some strong plum and prune character along with milder dark fruits in the background. Light cherry and a very faint amount of caramel. The flavor is sweet with a strong prune flavor and not much balance. Seems like a malty sweetness with fruit; no real yeast participation. Light-medium body with low carbonation and a bit of booze. Not a big fan overall, though nothing seriously wrong with it.
