COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Yeasty nose with only faintest bit of malt and raisins cutting through. Cloudy orange with a few floaties, thin off white head. Full, syrupy mouthfeel. Sweet date syrup flavor with a bourbon edge. Faint woody notes. Not very good even if I did like quads.

Bottle. A ruby amber color with a laced tan head. A spicy, clove/orange, sweet caramel aroma. A smooth enjoyable flavor and easy on the palate. The alcohol is extremely well hidden. A candy like flavor. Not too complex but enjoyable to drink.

UPDATED: NOV 4, 2011 (Two year old bottle) Pours a glowing reddish amber colour with a small off white head. The aroma is very sweet sugary and quite complex with some alcohol warmth. The malt brings caramel and toffee but also some notes of cookies and almonds. Floral hops in the background. Bit yeasty and very fruity with tones of cherries, pears, oranges, plums, kiwi and currant. Some sour candy. Also some spiciness in the background of pepper, cinnamon and maybe some clove. Hints of marzipan. Quite clean, yet fat and yeasty. The flavour is light to medium sweet, light bitter and light acidic. Medium fruity, medium spicy, medium to full malty and sugary and light yeasty. Lots of caramel, toffee, almonds and cherries but also some hints of cinnamon and white pepper. The mouthfeel is soft, round and sticky, but not too sticky. Medium sweet and light bitter with a light dryish ending. Aftertaste is peppery with a lingering sugary and caramelly sting. Near full bodied. This is a quite nice beer but not that try to the style and something is missing.

22 oz bottle purchased at Lukas in Kansas City, Missouri. Pour is a hazed golden brown with a tan head that falls quickly. The aroma is sweet pineapple brown sugar malt, along with floral spice yeast. Not much evident alcohol in the nose, which is a tad surprising. The taste is sweet up front, more brown sugar candy than pineapple, but the fruit is present. The yeast jumps in mid-taste, and sort of jumps on top of the sweet, rather than mixing in or integrating. There is a grassy earthy thing going on in the finish, and only the very end of the lingering finish shows alcohol. The flavors are decent, just a bit to sharp for my tastes. The palate is on the heavier side of medium bodied, with an oily syrupy mouth feel. This is a pretty typical American style Quad, in my book. I think someone looking for an aggressive, sweet beer would like this. That’s not my bag, though.

22z bottle. Sugary sweetness in the nose. Along with a slight cherry hint and a yeasty, bready, roasted malt nose. Ruby-brownish hue with quickly dissipating head. Thick sugary flavor instantly in the mouth. Then a bitterness that turns into a burnt suger finish.Thick in the mouth with lots of caramel and syrup. Little hop note. Good effervescense and mouthfeel. Nice fruit notes and the residual sugar flavor and aroma complement eachother. Great brew from a great brewery.

Once again I really feel that Avery is slagging these belgian styles. This pours an interesting bourbon color, a dark orangey-amber, but again its crystal clear and shows no hint of sediment in the bottle. The aroma was restrained, featuring a peppery, fusel alcohol and touch of burnt sugar. No real fruit to speak of. The flavor pretty one-dimensionally sweet up front, leading to hot and peppery alcoholic finish. It should hide the alcohol better. Again lacking the fluffy palate to lighten the body against the high alcohol. Just not getting it.

UPDATED: MAY 24, 2008 Aroma is fairly complex, having some spiciness, yeasty aromas, alcohol, syrupy maltiness, and some of the sugar in it, too. Bottle had the cap sealed in red wax, interesting, and somewhat of a puzzle for the first few moments. Carbonation is very fine, with a thin head. Color is a reddish amber. Flavor profile is reasonably satisfying, with the sweetness blending into the fruity maltiness quite nicely. Has a nice warming alcoholic finish, but has a very smooth palate for a beer of this caliber. Finishes rather long, and has a great spicy, alcoholic aftertaste. Consumed at approximately 60 degrees F. Recommended.
