COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Dark rich color with a small dense head. Huge beer. Right away I notice the alcohol is not hidden. Aroma give way to a burst of heat and dark fruit and sweetness. Some spice but more noticeable in the flavor. Flavor has more sweetness and a lot of burning heat. Molasses sweetness and some yeast. Nice overall with some fruit complexity.

bomber. very solid belgian style beer from one of my favorite breweries - avery. Really, they do not disappoint. This quadrupel style pours a deep red color with a tiny bit of head. Very sweet, sugary, molasses aroma coming off the glass. Wonderfully complex on the palate with spiciness on the front of the tongue, rich fruit tones, and a well balanced finish that leaves you wanting more. I think this one deserves a higher overall rating.... I give it an A.

Smelled like something similar to bleach. Poured a dark, cloudy brown with thick head. One of the best labels ive seen. Little bit too much for my taste, but not a bad beer.

UPDATED: NOV 30, 2008 On tap at the Oldsmar Tap House. Pours a deep amber color with a thin white head that provides lacing on the glass. Aroma is sweet, malty, nuts (sweet pecans?) with notes of fruit and a little spice. Flavor is sweet and malty with notes of candy, caramel, syrup, and maybe a touch of molasses. Medium to full body with a sweet and malty, caramel finish.

Bottle. The problem with the Avery "The" series (Czar, Reverend, Majaraja, Kaiser), is it’s hard to remember which ones you’ve had. Now that I’ve finally had the Reverend, I’ve had them all, so I don’t need to worry about it. Clearly underrated, there appears to be a bias against Avery for some reason. This is clearly one of the top 10-15 brewers in the country. Relatively faint aroma with some Belgian qualities. Slightly hazy copper body. Large yellowish, off-white head. Beautiful copper with lots of visible carbonation. Excellent lace. Very sweet and strong. Similar to New Glarus Unplugged Belgian Quad. This has a little more hop in the finish and is better than the NG. Excellent.

Just a little too sweet for me, but was still pretty good. My first "quadrupel"

UPDATED: MAR 28, 2005 Bottle. Pours a dark red/orange with a pretty one finger beige head with full glass lacing. Nose is hoppy, spicy and sweet. After smelling it, I thought that the first sip would be very powerful, and thankfuly it was not. The flavor is complex, but I will try to describe it: The first flavor notes that I pulled out was black pepper, sweet malt, currants, and hops. Secondary flavors are of alcohol, caramel, maybe a slight black cherry/raisin taste. The finish is slightly drier and burns just a little going down. I’ll be honest, after smelling this beer I thought that this would be an overpowering spicy beer. But I was wrong. This is an almost perfectly balanced hand crafted beer. The taste reminds me of a Dali painting: I can’t describe it, but it is most definately a thing of beauty.

Red-orange body with white head that disappears quickly. Some berry scent in the nose with spice and citrus. Flavor is sweet and syrupy. Very rewarding.
