COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

22 oz bottle. Pours a full rich amber color. Complex nose with notes of clove, malt, hops and candied fruit. Very crisp body. The palate is surprisingly dry despite the nose. I get notes of clove, nutmeg, hops and more candied fruits. Big, complex and hoppy. Finishes dry hoppy and long. Another great offering from Avery.

Grains, fruit, and yeast in the aroma. Clear orange color with a small white head. Bitter and sweet start with a mild alcohol burn in the finish. Lots of carbonation.

Golden red, bubble gum malt aroma that certainly not unpleasant, but seems to be lacking some depth. . . Bananas, green apples, some pears on the tongue, the only real complexity comes right at the finish when the sweet fruits morph into an unexpected oakiness. Pretty light on the palette for such a string beer. . . some spicy alcohol lingers as it warms, overall good beer but I was expecting a bit more complexity.

Very light in color for a quad, lighter amber. Big sweet aroma, almost too sweet, a little plasticy. Lots of malt in the flavor, a little too sweet, alcohol. Big body, harsh alcohol burn. Disappointing.

Speckled bright auburn color. The nose is fruity with hints of raisin and lots of alcohol. The body is fruity with hints of caramel. Thick and quite yeasty. Big alcohol and too sweet for my liking.

Copper in color with a thin white head. Sweet chewy malt aroma and a sweet cherry like taste.

UPDATED: AUG 15, 2008 Avery is getting to be one of my favorite breweries, so for a while I’ve been wanting to try some of their high end, bomber-only releases. This quadrupel, with its label drawing of a grim-faced monk standing before a colorful window, seemed like a good place to start. Bright, rust-colored pour. The aroma is potent and penetrates the sinuses - floral hops, peachy esters, grapes, and enough alcohol to make my eyes water. I sampled it from different glasses too, and I would not recommend a goblet with a narrow top, since that concentrates the smell too much. The flavor is robust, and seems as comparable to a liqueur or a whiskey drink as to a beer. This brew sends waves of different sensations along the palate. It starts out with sweet malt, Belgian yeast, and dried fruit; then shifts to hops, and finishes with a whiskey-infused warmth and numbness. There is a great blasphemous quote on the label: "Created by God, brewed by Satan, loved by all." Well, maybe not all. How about respected rather than loved? This is a good abbey ale, but a little too much like a bourbon cocktail for true love.

Clear-ish brown-amber. Small beige head. Yeasty aroma of banana, candy, almond nuts, & toffee. Soft, full-bodied feel. Decently complex, yeasty flavour of banana, candy, almond, band-aid, cinnamon, & toffee. Spicy, peppery finish.
