COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Pours with a quickly dissapearing, off-white head covering a copper body. Aroma is of spices, sugar, banana and cherries. Tastes of anice, spices, deep quad with possibly some coriander and banana. Mouthfeel is a bit too fizzy.

UPDATED: JAN 24, 2007 Pours ruby red with an initially thick off-white head that eventually subsides into a thin lacing that sticks around for the duration of the tasting. Smells like a port with some very nice big grapey notes, allspice and oranges. Tastes of figs, raisins, nuts, milk chocolate, and toffee. Finish is somewhat champagne like with some tickley notes and a grapey dry aftertaste.

Clear burgundy. White 1cm foam. Typical avery nose contains the light alcohol vapors and hoppiness. Fruity malt overtones (bubblegum, pears, cherries), almond and caramelised sugars aroma. Palate is also caramelic, earthy, heating. Finish includes traces of grassy, orangey and earthy bitter and astringent hops. All the way through though, there’s that dull avery yeast action going on which just doesn’t work so well with belgians. Body is fairly full, biting.

Pours semi hazy burnt umber with medium off-white head. Complex nose of Belgian malt, candi sugar, hopcit, fruit. Tastes fruity (cherries, red winey), sweet, with finishing hops, candi sugar, and alcohol. Very complex and pretty well balanced, but gets a bit warming at the finish. For God’s sake, get a designated driver if you drink more than one of these.

Bomber. Poured translucent copper with almost nothing going on for head. The nose picked up peppery alcohol, burnt caramel, rum-soaked raisins, and molasses... medium intensity. Flavor picked up too much of the booze factor, with peppery rum and dark fruit sweetness almost becoming cloying... bit of brown sugar and molasses, too... too sweet. Medium-bodied, but heavy on the spicage and sweetness.. made it hard to finish the bomber. OK.. but not one I’ll seek out again.
