COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

I have really enjoyed every Avery product I have had besides this one. The Reverend pours a reddish/copper color with a tan head. The aroma hits you hard with plenty of grass, some sweetness, and what seems to smell like tomato juice. The taste is just not good--they definitely went overboard on the candy sugar. The flavors are sweet--too sweet. I tasted some breads and tons of red beet-like flavors. I would not reccomend this beer to anyone."

Bomber; pours clear orange amber with slight white head that dissipates quickly. Sweet aroma of malts, orange and some licorice. Extra sweet taste of orange peel, sweet malts, licorice and a bit of spice. Sugary sweet to the point of being distracting, lacking any complexity and the alcohol kind of sits in the after taste. Seems to be all over the place without landing on anything of substance. Quite disappointing.

Aroma of sucking candies, appearance that is orange but lacking the foam that a "Belgian" style ale is required to have. Vanilla, apricot, booze and candied sugar are evident in the flavor but this is still missing the depth and complexity one would expect. Maybe this is too young. Man, I love Averys ambition but their execution is somewhat lacking.

Judging from the appearance and aroma, I expected to thoroughly enjoy this one...then comes the taste. I know the sugar has to be up there to attain the high alcohol content, but this is OVERLY SWEET. Had trouble getting this one finished.

UPDATED: SEP 13, 2007 Okay, a quad...this one poured light colored with decent head. No complexity at all and just too darned sweet...REALLY sweet and artificial tasting. Sugar and caramel. That’s all. I read a forum thread on how great Avery beers were...leave this one alone. If you want a quad, there are NUMEROUS better offerings out there...although the slogan "Created by God. Feared by Satan. Love by all." was kinda cool, I was kinda disturbed by the label...but maybe that’s me.

650ml - Cloudy, dark cooper under tiny, fleeting light tan head. Floral hops filling the room upon the pour. Green apples and malt buried far under alcoholic strength on the nose. Sweet aggressive grab on first sip, fading to a sweet and sour finish. Wildy out of balance, nothing like a true Belgian. A big letdown from an otherwise sound brewing company. Go for the Golden Monkey or better yet a real Belgian like Affligem here.

Eh, this was poor. Poured a way to light color for a quad/abt: golden-red color with slight brown-ness. The head was weak. Aroma was musty, slightly grassy, and lightly spiced. The lacing was nil. The flavor was caramel-like with a grassy aftertaste, some hay-like funk. Mouthfeel was sticky and unpleasant. This has to be the worst of the quads I’ve ever sampled.

22 oz botte. Pours a dark amber color with virtually no head. Little aroma, and oh my god sweet. Sweeter than sweet. Sickly sweet. More sweet than a beer should be. Did I say it was sweet. Eventually poured it down the drain, just way to sweet.

Red with slight orange hint. Poured with a bit of head but faded quick. Nose was beery-malt. Very little fizz. Alcoholic sweet, No complexity.

Maybe I came across a bad bottle, although I doubt it because this isn’t the first time Avery has sucked.... Smells of stale/rotten vegetables, some sweet malt and cardboard. Tastes the same with a very weird vegetative-like flavor. Pouring it into a wide mouth glass helped a little but was still a chore to drink... especially being so expensive. Sorry Avery I really want to be a fan, and have tried, but you’re just not doin it for me. Go with a better quad. Weyerbacher for instance.
