COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Bomber bottle. Pours a beautiful copper with lazy carbonation and a substantial off-white head that leaves great leggy lacing. The nose is complex, with banana esters, apples, caramel and an overall sugary sweetness. The beginning taste is where the punch is, which tastes almost like a fruit punch in fact. There’s so much going on here, it’s almost hard to map. Cherries and the above mentioned in the aroma. So sweet throughout the mid with a nice mellow current to the malty finish. The high alcohol content is barely apparent. This beer glides across the tongue. I was suprised at the lower scores on here. Another great Avery beer, and one of my favorites soley due to it’s complexity.

Ok, as a Reverend my rating might be suspect and I wouid understand. However, this is a great USA Belgian clone particularly with all that candi. Hi G beers have a great nose - bananas. The color is a clear light orange. The head is white and long lasting.

The beer is very tasty, i had it in a 1pint 6fl OZ bottle. It was a gift, and I love belgian beers. I am not sure what quadrupel ale means but it is very very tasty. My favorite beers are hoegarden and guiness.

Tasted from a bomber purchased in Fort Collins, Colorado. Pours a medium head with a slightly dark copper body. Very nice sweet head. Amazing sweet Belgian taste. One of the better American Quadrupels out there.

UPDATED: MAR 25, 2009 Update: Thoroughly delightful, a crisp and fruity Belgian ale. Upped from 4.2.

It requires a commentary in its own right, how I’ve observed the difference so far between "clear" Belgian Trips/Quads and the "cloudy" ones. The clear ones -- and this one is an example -- have this character that I could only describe initially as "alcohol-y" (there is a strong alcohol-like "burn" in the nose and the palate) but I could readily concede that it has to do not so much with alcohol (after all, the ABV of all are roughly consistent, around 10%), but with the particular hop/malt/yeast combinations used. After all, it seems lots of yeasty sediment goes along with being cloudy, and this doesn’t have it. Maybe this suggests that Belgians need more aging than this one is likely to have had. Which is really too bad, since I hate waiting.

(It is duly noted that other reviews tend to attribute this "burn" to spiciness. Yet I don’t see that on "cloudy" Belgian reviews.)

One last note, post-review: WTF is this beer doing being rated only a 3.6/5?????????? Wake up, beer raters! This is clearly in a superior class than that.

UPDATED: OCT 28, 2003 WOW! Deep copper in color with dark red on the fringes. The nose is enticing. Toffee, sugar, and orange. The taste is like a thinner EKU 28, but with a peach or nectarine splash in the mix. The alcohol is there but not overwhelming. Smooth texture in the mouth. Just slides down easily. Some spice but it's not like a standard Belgian Strong. Great beer! Recommended!

Much better than the one on tap (also 1 year old) at the Falling Rock at GABF time (02). Seems to have aged well. Smooth rounded sweetness but surprisingly drinkable for a 10% abv beer. Luckily I have another one.
