COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Pours a straw color with a brown tint. Aroma of dates, biscuits, cookies. Has a bready malt presence in the mouth with some alcohol and sweetness. Finishes dry.

Not a favorite style but one of the better versions of the style I’ve tried. Not excessively acidic or vinous. Nicely blended and reasonably dry finish. Cherries, currants, and molasses.

22oz bottle from sometime before spring 2008, #3 in our American Quad tasting. Pours a clear glowing amber with a fine frothy white head. Aroma is quite spicy, cinnamon, richly malty, reminds me of a doppelbock, oxidation is minimal, 7.5. Flavor is the same but a bit duller, the alcohol is unfortunately a bit too noticeable, the booziness thins and dulls the flavors out way too much, rich grassy malts, cinnamon, like the capital eisbock/doppelbock, the booziness really detracts from what seems like it could be an awesome beer. Medium bodied, thinner feeling, nice soft fizzy sizzling carbonation, softly nutty.

Probably sampled from a bottle at Mondiale 2010. Copper orange with a small head. This quad has a fruity/boozy aroma, with yeast, sweet spice, and something else I couldn’t place. Probably because I had had too much to drink. The flavour is on the sweet side as well, with ripe black cherries, peach, candi sugar, and a little spicy yeast. And booze. Pretty much as it should be. Full, sticky mouthfeel. Not bad. Avery really doen’t do a bad beer.

Botle at Trappeze. Poured an amber orangish color. Aroma of dark and sweet fruit, candy sugar, spice. Taste is similar with lots of fruit, sweet malt, candy sugar, mild spice, kind of like a festive ale. Mouth is coating, syrupy. Finish is warming and sweet. Overall, a decent fruity and spicey ale.

Bottle. Yet another Quardrupel, but this time somewhat disappointing. Small off-white fizzy head that mostly diminished. Spar lacing. Light particles in flow and color were amber. Aroma was recognizable as a Quardrupel with notes of dry fruit, hint of bread, toffee, liquorish and light vinous. Medium to full bodied with a light alcoholic texture. Flavor was moderated sweet malt with hint of hops bitterness. Finish was short and sweet. Not as powerful as I had hoped, think it needs a bit more punch in the aroma and over the palate, but still a very drinkable Quardrupel.

Shared bomber, poured into snifters. Dark, effervescent ruby with thick white head. Nose is plum, brown sugar, faint earthiness, young nuts, clove. Taste is sweet up front, with a finishing bitterness. Does not linger. Solid, if unspectacular.

Pours a coppery orange. The sparse head is a bit off-white. Nose is sweet, with apricots, raisins, spice, and sugar. Smooth mouthfeel, with just a hint of carbonation. Flavor is much of the nose, with the sugar, bits of molasses and spice coming through.

UPDATED: NOV 4, 2011 (Two year old bottle) Pours a glowing reddish amber colour with a small off white head. The aroma is very sweet sugary and quite complex with some alcohol warmth. The malt brings caramel and toffee but also some notes of cookies and almonds. Floral hops in the background. Bit yeasty and very fruity with tones of cherries, pears, oranges, plums, kiwi and currant. Some sour candy. Also some spiciness in the background of pepper, cinnamon and maybe some clove. Hints of marzipan. Quite clean, yet fat and yeasty. The flavour is light to medium sweet, light bitter and light acidic. Medium fruity, medium spicy, medium to full malty and sugary and light yeasty. Lots of caramel, toffee, almonds and cherries but also some hints of cinnamon and white pepper. The mouthfeel is soft, round and sticky, but not too sticky. Medium sweet and light bitter with a light dryish ending. Aftertaste is peppery with a lingering sugary and caramelly sting. Near full bodied. This is a quite nice beer but not that try to the style and something is missing.
