COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Dark amber pour with very little head. Sweet nose with toffee hints. Thick and lingering. Some spice with sweetness all over the palate.

Poured into a goblet. 3.5 A: Clear, deep amber color. A little over one finger of light tan, frothy/creamy head. Retention is average and a short ring of lacing is left. 4.0 S: Very effervescent. Super strong cherry with accompanying berry aromas. Really, it’s tough to search for anything else since the fruits are so up in your face. Plum is also burly, but the currants, raisin, and dates aren’t. Good bit of caramel and candi sugar and maybe a touch of molasses underneath. Sweet, but clean overall. Lacking much of the earthiness of the Belgian quads, but a pleasant aroma nonetheless. Mild, though noticeable booze. 4.0 T: Like the nose, this is full of cherries, berries, and plums. Currants, prune, and raisins in limited amounts. Caramel and candi sugar are abundant again. Touch of molasses and a light woodiness, though again not very earthy overall. Clean, sweet for the style, with a light booziness not unbecoming of a 10% brew. 3.5 M: Medium to heavier medium body. Heavier on the tongue than some of the best Belgian mouthfeels, but good enough. Moderate amounts of moderately spritzy carbonation. Reasonably creamy and super smooth. 4.0 D: More and more I think that the general Quad should be split into Belgian and American Quads. This is very tasty, but it doesn’t taste all that much like the famous Trappist quads out there. Super tasty beer that is fruit centric and vivid. UPDATED: MAY 20, 2012 Pours to a lovely dark orange and orange-ish head. Smell has some fruit and lots of yeast, but also surprisingly earthy - don’t care much for that element. Taste is sweet, almost artificially so. Some spice also. Malty finish. Feel like I should be tasting something more complex in this quad, but it isn’t there. Gets a little better the longer it sits in the fridge, but still not a wower. 10% ABV makes sense - neither feel this one too strongly nor feel like it’s less. Doesn’t compare to Boulevard’s Sixth Glass - maybe more comparable to Schlafly’s quad. Not what I’d recommend to quad starters.

22 ounce bottle into chalice, no bottle dating. Pours crystal clear reddish copper color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lasts. Some good spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of caramel, molasses, raisin, toffee, biscuit, toasted grain, grape, candi sugar, and light yeast spices. Some very nice and well balanced aroms; with good complexity and strength. Taste of big caramel, biscuit, molasses, toffee, raisin, fig, toasted grain, light clove, and slight yeast spices. Lingering notes of caramel, toffee, raisin, fig, biscuit, molasses, and light yeast spices on the finish for a while. Fantastic flavor balance and complexity; with no cloying sweetness at all. Extremely easy to sip on; with hardly any alcohol warming noticed other than a minimal warming after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy and fairly slick mouthfeel. Overall, this is a fantastic Belgian quad style. Great flavor balance and complexity; and extremely smooth to sip on. Loved this one.

Bottle. Strong banana bread & ripe fruits on the nose. Rust in color with almost no head or lacing. The flavor is all banana bread and fruit. Mild carbonation gives I a slight bite, along with the clove and spice that works into the finish.

UPDATED: MAY 5, 2012 On tap at Oak St. Draft House. Pours a murky red brown with a thin quickly dissipating tan head. Aroma is dark fruit, bread, and some caramel. Taste is pretty sweet. There is some cherry, brown sugar, bread, and spiciness in the finish. Alcohol is concealed fairly well but is noticeable in the end. Not bad.

Definitely malty on the aroma, not great there. Appearance is excellent, with a dark, redness that is pleasing. Head was not overly large, just about right. Taste is a little sweet, with a strong alcohol bite, not unpleasant though. Palate is influenced by the bubbles in the head. Overall a decent, good brew from CO.

On tap at RNH. Pour is hazy amber with a very small white head. Aroma is heavy towards with malts - honey, fruits, white wine. Similar taste but more pronounced. Sort of a mix between a barley wine and a quad, not bad.

Murky reddish-brown color, no head. Nice sweet aroma. Marshmellows and fruit. Nice flavor of various dark fruits but very thin mouthfeel. Not so good aftertaste either. Too light and thin for a quad. Expected more from a brewery like Avery.
