Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Sweet malty smell. Pretty amber color with hyperactive bubbles and a big stationary head. Malty with some alchohol. Would age great. Smooth mouthfeel. Slight bitter hoppyness. Some fruityness (maybe raisin?). Actually I wouldn’t age it because the alcohol fits the drink. Adds a spicy kick to it. The aftertastes makes my tongue tingle slightly.

Crushed with Jakebra. Not much on the nose, but a good fruity flavor that hangs around and changes as it warms. Can’t stand up to the Chimays awesomeness, but it’s aight

The alcohol taste from the candi sugar is unbelievably forward. Very disappointing. The yeast is flavorful, as is the malt when you can detect them over the cloying sweetness and raw (kool-aid wine taste) alcohol flavors. The harshness mellows as it warms, but that’s like saying the pain fades after you are punched in the face. The label says this brew is feared by Satan, maybe it will cancel out some of the Russian River Damnation I’ve drank. Complexity is lost behind the wave of raw alcohol. They need to be more careful in fermenting simple sugars. Fails in my book.

Pours a beautiful gold/amber with a small white head. Great beer overall, nice mix of malt and hop flavors, as the commercial description says, it’s surprisingly smooth considering it’s alcohol content.

This beer looks like the blood of christ, tainted with a lttle burnt sienna and brilliant golden-orange- shining, gleaming... and intimidating. The head is very small and quickly receds into a light film atop the beer. This is a very distinct color indeed, looking more like a big glass of Grand Marnier. The aroma is very straightforward and "alive"- full of yeast complexities, apparent candi sugar, burnt malt, and dried, rich fruits. Morello cherries, dates, plums and grape jam complement an earthy, pungent, dry grappa-like smell. This is followed by a very herbal character, with damiana, red licorice and cinammon. Very aptly named, this beer has a rather "sacred" feel. The taste is rather strong at first sip, with an immediate hint of alcohol, but this quickly fades into notes of sour curacao oranges, strong sour cherry, and a woody, earthy herbalness that washes the palate and leaves a slightly drying, bitter, and rather medicinal gentian root finish, with spicy ginger and even a wormwood bitterness. Overall, this is a very interesting, powerful beer that hints at being too medicinal, but makes up for it with it’s spicy, fruity finish. All hail the Reverend.
