4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 RichJ7 (1175) - Cullman, Alabama, USA - MAY 8, 2008
Opaque black pour with a quarter-inch beige head. Big, malty nose full of alcohol and sweet dark fruit. Flavor is much the same, dominated by chocolate, caramel, and alcohol. Man, this is rich. Nice warming brew with a pleasantly full mouthfeel This is wonderful.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Plovmand (4693) - Helsinge, DENMARK - MAY 4, 2008
Pours dark brown with a medium beige head. Spicy aroma with notes of dark matured fruits. Flavour is prunes and raisins mixed with cocoa, spices and alcohol. Brilliant.
4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 maltdog (587) - Pueblo, Colorado, USA - APR 28, 2008
This is a dark! wheat bock; a peaty mahogany color. The smallish ecru head heralds mild-mannered lace leavings. Heady aromas astound with lush prune, clove, beeswax, bayleaf, bitter chocolate, gingerbread spice, and the piney-salty scents of oregano and rosemary. A sweet (tho’ not overly so) flavor overflows with superlative fruitiness: honey and framboise, deepest bittersweet chocolate, mango, black licorice, clove and cranberry… and background wit-like impressions of coriander and bitter orange, plus the comforting, chewy warmth of fresh-baked bread. Through-the-sinuses stiletto ethanol enchants and lobotomizes with gingery the warmth of 9.5 abv. Citric acidity cuts cleanly through a full, juicy-slippery palate. Exotic white pepper, cardamom, marigold, and cola aftertaste is like the afterglow of frantic, sweaty sex with your gf’s sister in a steamy-hot tent . A truly amazing beer… tactile, contemplative, intimidating, and seductive.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 demitriustown (877) - Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA - APR 26, 2008
Bomber: Aroma permeates with dark fruit, a nice spicy caramel malt overtone, toffee, licorice, a slight scent of chocolate, and a bit of alcohol. Appearance is a deep ruby color with a medium sized tan head that diminishes into a film. Taste is got a really nice malt characteristic, wheat, and on the backend the spices come through. Palate is lightly sweet on the lips, somewhat tongue coating, and aftertaste has a lingering fruity malt characteristic. Overall, an enjoyable beer to say the least. Nice aroma, looks inviting, and a nicely complex taste. Cheers!
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 BlackDonald (1127) - Boise, Idaho, USA - APR 18, 2008
This goes back to my whole feeling about German purity and being true to styles. Again too bold and big, which is not always better. Sometimes they pull it off and sometimes they don’t, this was one of those examples. Too sweet, out of balance, with a woody rum type finish. I could not finish the bomber, slightly disappointing.
3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 georgekappus (296) - Brookfield, Connecticut, USA - APR 18, 2008
Bottle. Pours an opaque black with little head but what little head there is had strong retention. Aroma was honey, grass and caramel. Taste was too sweet, too much honey, lots of alcohol and wood pulp. There was a bit of carbonation.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Gregis (1250) - Shawnee, Kansas, USA - APR 18, 2008
Pours a deep mahogany with a loose, frothy beige head that diminishes to a thin cap and laces nicely. The nose if of toffee and cocoa with a solid boozy note that makes it smell as if it were bourbon barrel aged. Also present are spicy fruity esters that remind me of fruitcake. Light to medium-bodied and silky-soft, the mouthfeel transitions to a lightly boozy finish. The flavor follows the nose, with a slightly woody/bourbon note at the finish and in the aftertaste. I know this wasn’t barrel conditioned, but it certainly possesses some of the qualities you’d expect if it had been. This is a pretty tasty brew that is missing only that little "it" factor which keeps it from being truly great.
