2.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 deyholla (3154) - Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA - OCT 6, 2009
Bottle. Poured near black with a slight red tinge and a thin light brown head. Aroma has a strong alcohol sent with some smokey malt characters. Flavor also has a bit of a harsh alcohol flavor that overwhelms the malty flavor. It may be past its peak at this point.
2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 yemenmocha (657) - Glendale, Arizona, USA - SEP 19, 2009
Almost stout like in appearance, nearly opaque dark brown to black with tan head. Nose is typical weizenbock - dark malts, bananna fruit, bread.
On the palate is a big caramal to roasted malt sweetness followed by hefty alcohol warmth. Finish is long and alcoholic. Definitely a high % alcohol bock beer.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 larsga (4435) - Oslo, NORWAY - JUL 21, 2009
Medium brownish head. Hazy dark red brown body. Papery syrupy malty aroma with caramel and alcohol notes. Dryish-sweet raisiny licorice and soy taste with alcohol and paper notes, with some vanilla and roasty chocolate. Rounded smooth mouthfeel with alcohol heat. Fullish body. Dry chocolate and vanilla aftertaste with wooden notes. Was told this was perhaps a bit past its prime at 3-4 years of age. (0.655l bottle, Oslo beer junta tasting.)
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Defreni (1781) - Husum, DENMARK - JUL 19, 2009
Flaske: Overraskende frisk. Flot dybrød/brun næsten uigennemsigtig øl med et lille skumhoved. God duft af bær og en smule hvede. Smagen er domineret af balanceret alkohol på den gode måde. Bitter finish. Oloroso karakter med en tør eftersmag. Virkelig godt lagret. Super øl.
2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 OleR (3510) - Oslo, NORWAY - JUL 9, 2009
Bottle@Oslo Øljunta Olympen gathering. A low beige head upon a barely translucent, dark brown colored body. Vinous aroma, soft malty with faint caramel and a whiff of dark bread and dried fruits. Mellow and rather bland malt body, soft and vinous fruitiness. Low carbonation level. Feels flat in the mouth. Mild malty finish. Could have been a really nice one, but this beer is obviously oxidized. Hope I’ll get another chance to taste it. Meanwhile, re-rate is pending.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 KnutAlbert (4384) - Oslo, NORWAY - JUL 2, 2009
Strong vinous aroma.
Lots of sweetness. No wheat character, lots of sweet malt, some sourness in the finish. Oaky dryness, some vanilla and other spices.
4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 alagnak (467) - Littleton, Colorado, USA - JUN 4, 2009
On tap @ Avery - three year old keg. Really great nose of damp earth, rasins. Upfront flavor is really weizen-esque, and really complex - sweet, rich with various fruits (strawberry, some plum), and some spicy toffee. Our whole table (most new to craft beer) wanted full pints, but they’re only offering tasters, so stuck with multiples of those. never had it fresh, but with 3 years on it, it’s superb.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 MAP (1133) - Lakewood, Ohio, USA - APR 29, 2009
Bottle purchased at Knightly Spirits in Orlando. One of the last bottles left on the shelf and the clerk (he’s on here, I forget his name sadly). I wish I could have had this sample when it came out, because now it smells a little rough and old. One the plus side, the aroma has developed into this very earthy, raisin, soy sauce, with a good funky yeast, and at this age, its real funky. The flavor, well, now I know how it’s been drinking well. Man, I love this earthy bocky flavor. It reminds me of Sam Adams Triple Bock in the nose (not over-the-top however,) but the flavor is rich and full. The texture is slightly gritty, earthy and ends velvety. Man, I love the flavor of this, it is richwith a mild bit of fruity grain. Man, top notch stuff.
