3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 lethe (173) - New York, USA - AUG 2, 2006
Deep brown pour that turns crimson to light. Nose is muddled, sticky sweet then roast, I became confused. Heavy, full body has a nice touch to it. Flavor is much more than the aroma with a nice weizen quality (yeasty, dry, appetizing) up front, followed by a rich bock barrage of sweet chocolate and caramel. This has a nice depth and dimension to its flavors before it succumbs to its nemesis. Alcohol. A strong, astringent alcohol presence suffocates what this brew had acheived. Less than the sum of its parts, Avery took a shot and failed admirably.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Cornfield (5239) - Oak Forest, Illinois, USA - AUG 2, 2006
Pours a deep brown with ruby highlights and a creamy light brown head. Minimal lacing. The aroma has sweet wheat, a light malt, bananas, and dried fruits. Tastes much the same with the addition of hot spices and a hit of alcohol. Dry, alcohol filled finish. Not bad, but missed my expectations.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 heykevin (1269) - Decorah, Iowa, USA - AUG 1, 2006
Deep ruby. Spicy wheat-prune-banana nose, a little hint of fresh cowshit, which is actually better than it sounds. Spicy clove and cinnamon flavor, thick and chewy. Some considerable alcohol, thick and malty, sweet alcoholic finish, warming. Solid, if unspectacular big beer from Avery.
3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 jeffc666 (1983) - Fairfax, Virginia, USA - JUL 31, 2006
A beautiful pour, clear dark garnet body topped by a dense creamy tan head. Tha aroma is sweet and esthery banana and raisins. They suceeded it seems in welding a wheat aroma with a dopplebock. The flavor is marred by a huge wallop of alcohol. Some sweetness backs this up but things do not come together very well unforunately. The body is dry and very prockly with the alcohol playing a prominent role in things. In the end it is mildly amusing but not special in any way.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 DrBeer (825) - Solna Stockholm, SWEDEN - JUL 30, 2006
Dark brown with red notes. Almost no beige head. Chocolate aroma with notes of banana, alcohol, brown sugar, perfume, fruits and roasted malts.
Dry chocolate flavor. Alcoholic with some sweetness.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 jhumphries69 (1035) - Tyrone, Georgia, USA - JUL 28, 2006
This was an interesting beer. The color is quite dark for a weizenbock (more like a dunkelweizenbock). The aroma smells sweet, with a little wheat aroma, and some roasted flavors. The flavor is surprisingly "dark" tasting - interesting caramelized sugars, roasted bitter flavors - uncharacteristic of traditional weizenbock. It is quite malty sweet and not particularly wheaty tasting. The yeast also does not smell or taste like traditional weizen yeasts. A very intriguing beer - it was very good (though not what I expected from the style). It is also quite strong (though the alcohol is well hidden in the flavor).
2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 argo0 (9034) - Washington DC, USA - JUL 28, 2006
(22oz bottle) Clear dark mahogany body topped by pillowy beige head. Aroma is medium sweet, raisin, caramel, alcohol astringency, light banana, cherry, chocolate. Taste is moderately sweet, caramel, raisin, some banana, astringent alcohol, light chocolate. Medium-full body, light creaminess. Alcohol astringency detracts significantly -- in fact, I couldn’t finish it.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 BBB63 (4939) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - JUL 26, 2006
Bottle and served in my Aventinus glassware at near room temp: Mahogany hued topped by a beautiful creamy beige head and excellent lace. The aroma has notes of banana, prune, clove, caramel, wheat and yeast esters, and slight phenols.
Starts with a rich caramel and toffee malt taste with a lot of weizen-like character added in for good measure. Wonderfully balanced and not too sweet or alcoholic. Other than some medicinal flavor on the aftertaste, I could not find anything wrong with the beer.
Yep, I seem to dig this more than the average Ratebeerian but then again it is a style I wish more brewers would attempt. Should have bought more than two bottle! GET YA SOME!
