3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 lamas (1033) - Washington DC, USA - JUN 3, 2006
22 oz. bottle. Bottled in 2006. A muddy mahogany pour with a thick, creamy mocha head. Rich aroma of wheat bread, raisins, bananas, peanut butter cups and cinnamon. Thick, full body. Alcohol is noticeable throughout. Unfortunately, there is also a sour taste (normally associated with brown ales and those that try to include nutty flavors) that is also present throughout. Otherwise, this beer features plenty of dark, wheaty malts, caramel, cocoa, cinnamon and spices, raisins and bananas. A slightly dry finish. If it weren’t for the sour, nutty taste, this would be a fantastic beer.
2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 beachbum25 (1033) - Powellville, Maryland, USA - MAY 28, 2007
22 oz Bomber-poured a dark ruby red color w/a moderate off white head. Sweet roasted malt finish. Average taste of sweet roasted malt. Some bread dough & molasis. Smelled a lot better than it tasted, kind of bland & one dementional. Alcohol was evedent. Nice mouthfeel, but it just didn’t deliver for me. Not up to Avery’s usual standard.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 ChillCoat (1030) - Concord, California, USA - FEB 9, 2007
Bottle. Pours a slick black color with a light tan head. Chocolate and raisin aromas with an almost citrusy note. Thick mouth feel with a good bit of carbonation. Dry and fruity with a substantial sweetness somewhere mid-palate. Caramel, chocolate, dark fruits and even some slight banana notes. Finishes dry. Slightly hot.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 SpudClampDawg (1029) - Jasper, Indiana, USA - JUN 2, 2006
Pours with a great creamy head that becomes a mound of whipped cream in the glass. The aroma is really sharp - classic weizen yeast is almost acidic with esthery notes of banana, pear and apple. Light lemon and citrus hoppiness as well. At first sip, the body encompassed the same sharpness, but as the beer went I adjusted and this became real drinkable. Ripe banana and vanilla notes play with the solid bready malts. Leads into a long, enjoyable finish.
3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 trokini (1027) - San Diego, California, USA - NOV 7, 2006
Clear, dark brown pour with a firm tan head. Aroma of toasted bread, wheat, and darker fruit. Taste is initially light, then grows stronger towards the back. Nice balance of yeast esters and the wheat up front that turns into a roasted malt and caramel sweetness. Almost schizophrenic in its taste. Very clean and very good.
4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20 TheBeerLover (1019) - DC Metro Area, USA - SEP 1, 2006
750ml bottle. Pours to a murky, deep ruby to red color, with a thick, creamy, head, and a moderate to lively carbonation. The nose on this beer is pleasing, with good aromas of caramel, toffee, and fruity estery aromas. The palate is firm, with good sweet malt, toffee, nuts, and estery fruit flavor. This beer finishes with good malt and fruit flavor up front, then ends with some peppery alchol, and a vinous note that lingers. A very tasty, delicious beer, but a bit lacking as a weizenbock. It lacks the signature aromas and flavors of a beer brewed with the Weihenstaphaner yeast strain. Avery states they use it, but it is lost in this beer. Again tasty enough beer, but not as authentic as I would have liked.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 fiver29 (1014) - Cleveland, Ohio, USA - JUL 7, 2010
Bottle pours dark brown sugar color with off white head. Aroma is caramel, brown sugar, and some oxidation. Medium mouthfeel. Its smooth, flavorful, and makes me want more. This is a great brew.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 talon1117 (1011) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - SEP 18, 2006
Pours murky, hazy brown with ruby hints; head is tan, creamy, fluffy and mostly lasts. Nose is nice with a caramel and toffee character to add to the spicy, clovey, banana esters. The flavor shifts towards the dopplebock aspects; caramel, chocolate, nutty, slightly roasty and toasty, with the estery flavors sticking around along with a fruity character. It is a little sweet, but it is somewhat appropriate and it does do a good job of hiding the hardly noticible alcohol. Palate is medium bodied but with a soft, chewy, somewhat creamy texture. I really liked this one, but I don’t really know why it is. Avery sure has a way of creating and extending the boundaries of every style of beer. Certainly different from any beer you will try, but it will not blow you away.
