Cobra (1029), In the snake pit, Maryland, USA May 25, 2006 22 oz. brown bomber bottle. I didn’t see a freshness date, but that doesn’t mean much. This beer is very, very fresh. Poured out a dark chocolate brown, with red highlights around the edges. It has a decent mocha colored sticky head on it. It leaves a decent lacing down the sides of the glass also. Aromas are of toffee, caramel wheat malt, slightly roasty also. Flavors are incredible. Caramels, toffees, malts, brown sugar, cookie dough, with a hint of raisins also. Thick, rich body, chewy texture & mouthfeel. Almost a meal in a glass. Alcohol is well hidden underneath all those malts. I think I detect a decoction mash here gang. Just enough hops to balance the sweetness of the malts. Hersbrucker or Hallertau hops in the mix. Damn good beer overall. Best effort from Avery in awhile. Make this a regular offering, guys. I’m impressed. Jvittorio4187 (255), Boardman, Ohio, USA Feb 24, 2007 Updated: Jun 17, 2007Massive, massive, massive. Very good. Heavy notes of fruit which progresed through aging. Avery never ceases to impress. maltdog (411), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Apr 28, 2008 This is a dark! wheat bock; a peaty mahogany color. The smallish ecru head heralds mild-mannered lace leavings. Heady aromas astound with lush prune, clove, beeswax, bayleaf, bitter chocolate, gingerbread spice, and the piney-salty scents of oregano and rosemary. A sweet (tho’ not overly so) flavor overflows with superlative fruitiness: honey and framboise, deepest bittersweet chocolate, mango, black licorice, clove and cranberry… and background wit-like impressions of coriander and bitter orange, plus the comforting, chewy warmth of fresh-baked bread. Through-the-sinuses stiletto ethanol enchants and lobotomizes with gingery the warmth of 9.5 abv. Citric acidity cuts cleanly through a full, juicy-slippery palate. Exotic white pepper, cardamom, marigold, and cola aftertaste is like the afterglow of frantic, sweaty sex with your gf’s sister in a steamy-hot tent . A truly amazing beer… tactile, contemplative, intimidating, and seductive. BeerFanDan17 (359), Land O Lakes, Florida, USA Mar 4, 2007 Delicious Doppelbock with all the rich and complex flavors you would expect from Avery. Similar to a Kostrizer, this dark Weizen is strong and smooth at first with dark chocolate, coffee, and malt flavors on the palate. Definitely worth a try! RichJ7 (859), Cullman, Alabama, USA May 8, 2008 Opaque black pour with a quarter-inch beige head. Big, malty nose full of alcohol and sweet dark fruit. Flavor is much the same, dominated by chocolate, caramel, and alcohol. Man, this is rich. Nice warming brew with a pleasantly full mouthfeel This is wonderful.
