On draft at the CCB Tasting Room. Pours a dark brown with an off-white head. Nose is some smoke, some chocolate, caramel, and a hint of toffee. Flavor is similar- a nice blend of smoke into chocolate, molasses, and slight fruit.

Pour on tap at the brewery, dark brown pour with thin yellowish head, aroma brought notes of sweet molasses and dark sugars, hints of smoke and a slight chili note, touch of earth and spice notes complement fairly well. Taste is a nice mix of smoke and sweet, dark fruits and some cherry notes mix with the smoke and slightly toasted malts, finishing fairly sweet but the smoke balances it.

Nose is light smoke/roast. Almost a light meaty aroma. Some light malt and fruity esters too. The body was dark and appealing. Tastewise I get a touch more fruit than anything else, with a bit caramel malt and sweet flavors running around. Not bad at all.

As a fan this one was a real treat. The smoke is more apparent in the nose than the taste for me. As a dopplebock it was light on the malts, but sort of fruity also with a lingering hint of burnt toffee. For a 9% brew it is very session-able.

Sampled at Brewvival 2012. Murky brown pour with good tan head. Small hammy presence in the aroma was nice. Good dopplebock undertones, very solid actually, but I REALLY like HEAVILY smoked beers, so this one wasn’t as over the top as i would have liked. Moderately carbonation, almost some rye quality in there as well.

Draft at Brewvival 2012. Pours a hazy brown color with a thin creamy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of toffee, raisin, smoke, cherries and leafy hops. Tastes of toffee, berries, raisin, smoke and a hoppy finish. Medium bodied.

Tap @ Avery. Dark brown appearance with a small, brown head. Toasty, caramel malty, mildly smoked, light toffee aroma. The flavor was pretty nice with a mild smokiness and a rich, toasty, toffee/caramel malty flavor with a note of molasses and char. Last time around, I didn’t care for this one all that much, but I enjoyed it this time around.

on tap at Avery on 4/9/10... dark red pour with a small white head... light smoke malt nose... sweet malt body with a big sweet finish with some raisin notes... very drinkable, but not quite where it needs to be for me...
