UPDATED: OCT 12, 2012 At 2012 Avery Strong Ale Fest. Black with a thin tan head. Big outlandish aroma of dark roast coffee, bakers chocolate, vanilla-oak, with a touch of pecan-like nuttiness and caramel. Taste is gigantic and palate slaughtering. Dark chocolate, dark coffee, oak, lots of french vanilla, caramel, and brown sugar-bourbon, finishing with big fat tones of oak, coffee, and chocolate. Lots of barrel booziness but also lots of mocha java sweetness.

Pour on tap at the brewery, dark oily black pour with creamy dark tan head, aroma brought big notes of coffee, chocolate, milk and dark chocolate notes, slight hints of bourbon and vanilla but not much, some nice dark fruits laced throughout as well. Taste is a nice mix of big espresso and roasted coffee moving into sweet bourbon and vanilla notes, nice chocolate and dark fruit notes, slight molasses finishes fairly sweet but the roasted coffee notes help balance. It is a great beer, but not much different than the regular.

On tap at the Avery Strong Ale Fest. I got this 3 times on Saturday to kick start the festivities and sweep out the cobwebs from the previous days fogginess. Pours a dark cola brown with fuzzy tan head. Terrific aroma of espresso, whiskey barrel, sweet chocolate and malts. Taste was serious coffee and bourbon. warmed as it went, smooth and silky each time. Medium bodied and lightly carbonated, it had a slightly hot bourbon and vanilla finish. A nice twist on Meph Addict.

Boulder Strong Ale Fest. Black appearance with a dark brown head. Fairly rich coffee, light caramel, very light bourbon, roasty chocolate malty aroma. Thick mouth feel. Rich dark chocolate, fairly bitter, roasty coffee, caramel, very light bourbon flavor with a burning, boozy finish. I was really looking forward to this one and I was a bit let down. The bourbon didn’t really come through all that much and the coffee didn’t seem as fresh as with most batches of Meph Addict.

On draft at Avery. Shared by a kind soul. I didn’t search like Dak and Doug, but it was tempting in order to get more. Pours a deep brown with a tan head. Nose is big coffee, chocolate, bourbon, and vanilla. Flavor follows with fudgy chocolate, coffee, some light roast and a bit of vanilla and bourbon. Medium in body and for a bruiser of this size, it’s delightful.

Man, what a search. On tap at Avery during 2012 GABF week. It runs out as I am in line! I run around scanning people’s glasses in search of a soul to share- yes I did that. I almost gave up until one person offers it to me! Pours a totally black color, no head. A huge nose of bourbon and coffee. Of course, a similar flavor of massive coffee, smooth sweet barrel, actually this is understated despite being 16%. Drinkable.
