Special tapping at Avery's for GABF 2013. After drinking a pint of out of mind, I find this ridiculously strong. Not in a bad way at all. This beer is quit enjoyable. Very dark brown pour (zero transparency), with a thick dark tan head. The flair is quite intense, with a strong bitterness from the coffee. At 16% alc, this is not a session beer; but considering the strong palate it's quite drinkable. Overall this beer is a fantastic and unique imperial stout.

Yummy stuff, whatever they’re calling it this year. Lots of coffee aroma and flavor with chocolate, malt and smoky accents. Thank you sir, may I have another?

Draft at the brewery. Pours an opaque brown - near black - with a finger of dark tan head. Looks good. Aroma of coffee, molasses, chocolate, dates, and a lot of dry, toasty, and roasty malts. The flavor is the same, but with more dark chocolate and a more obvious Belgian character. Full-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a rich, roasty mouthfeel. So rich. Some bitterness. For one of the highest-rated coffee stouts ever, this was a little disappointing. I liked it but had higher expectations.

On tap at brewpub on 060913. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma has lots of coffee, as it warms up dried fruits, caramel, malt and alcohol is coming through. Taste is coffee and bitter chocolate and sweet dark fruits and alcohol. Medium to full body with a soft carbonation, finish is light bitter chocolate and warming alcohol.

On tap the brewery. Pour is pitch black with a frothy brown head and great lacing. Big coffee, chocolate, light bourbon, woody, vanilla, light anise, and licorice in the aroma. Taste is big dark chocolate, espresso, vanilla, big wood, dark fruits, toffee, and caramel with a little heat on the backend. Sticky mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Amazing stout and I can’t believe it’s that high in alcohol.

(Critique chaotique du extreme beer fest 2013): J’aurais probablement payé le prix d’entrée juste pour la respirer. Le scientifique fou qui a réussi à intégrer la juste (voire déraisonable) dose de café, mérite d’être canonisé. Hellsspresso!!!!!!&#

On draft at Churchkey in D.C. Served alongside Avery Mephistopheles. The beer is black with a quarter inch of oily, dark beige head. The aroma offers a potent dose of rich coffee, followed by light booze, roast, espresso, malt, chocolate. What a bold flavor! Rich and intense with a grand coffee presence. Alcohol warmth in the finish, but not nearly the heat I was expecting and even fearing from a beer of this stature. Full bodied with moderately low carbonation. A delightful brew to sip and savor. I’m so glad I finally came across this one. Delicious.

On tap at EBF 3/16/13. Smells of coffee in spades, but there is a roasty and caramel malty sweetness underneath that works really well to counter the bitter coffee flavor. the big abv is brilliantly masked, I love this beer.
