4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Draft at Varga Bar.
Pours pitch black and complete opaque with faint mahogany edges and a one finger frothy mocha head. Good retention slowly fading into to lasting ring. Spotty chocolate colored lacing left behind.
Roasted coffee and dark malt aroma with lots of roasty espresso and toast but not burnt smelling. Hints of sweet chocolate, nut, oatmeal and subtle booze. Smells like really roasted chocolate coffee.
Chewy viscous body with a blast of smooth roasted coffee up front that lingers over the roasted malt notes into a lingering dry finish. Smooth coffee flavor that is roasted wihout being acrid or burnt. Countered by hints of toast, dark choc, oatmeal and nuttiness. Subtle lactic creaminess with faint sweet booziness in the finish. Abv very well masked with little heat in the back end and faint warmth in the finish.

On tap at Kraftwork for Avery day, this is the barrel aged version of mephistopheles with a generous amount of coffee added. Pours a deep cola color with small to medium khaki head. Lacing is very impressive...barely see my glass behind the film of brown stickiness. Aromas of roasted nuts, smoked malts, charred toffee, tons of coffee beans and chocolate bar. Taste is scary drinkable and layered for the 16.3% alcohol. how do they get a beer like this to give off such minimal heat? Other notes of mollases, bourbon, smoked malts, vanilla bean. This beer reminded me of a boozier kbs from founders. Cheers to Adam Avery for this homerun of a brew.

Draft at Long Room. I saw this and couldnít resist it. Iím not super keen on the original Mephistopheles but itís alright. This one was damn awesome. The bitterness of the coffee really cuts through the booze and adds a solid balance that isnít really in the original. Pours quite syrupy with a dissipating head. Nose is boozey, but not as much as I would have thought. Coffee and roast dominate. On tasting, a great balance between all of the alcohol and the coffee. It really drinks amazingly clean and easy for what it is. Iím very impressed.

Tap @ Falling Rock, Denver. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma hard roasted malt, coffee, expresso, dark chocolate. Taste is tons of coffee, cold expresso, hints of licorice and dark chocolate, alchohol well hidden for the 16% ABV. Full body, nice amount of carbonation for the ABV, dry bitter coffee finish. Very good, allthough abit onesided as the coffee aroma and taste is so dominant. 080411

In short: A superior roasted coffee stout. A big monster that is too easy to drink. Wow!
How: Tap at Extreme Beer Fest 2011
The look: Black body topped by a large beige head
In long: Nose is very roasted, plenty of coffee. Body is awesome, obviously very full and thick but also rather well carbonated for a 16% monster. Taste is not uber-complex but neither are most coffee stouts. Roasted coffee beans abound and strong cacao notes. Finish is very bitter and dare I say a bit dry, it almost feels very hoppy but Iím pretty sure all the bitterness and dryness sensation comes from the roasted coffee beers. Alcohol and sweetness well hidden. This beer was such a success across the board with everybody who had it at EBF that Iím fully expecting Avery to make it a regular. Iíve never been a big fan of the base beer (Mephistopheles) or any of Averyís big beers but Meph Addict kicks ass and I have no problem giving credit when credit is due. My problem is giving payment when payment is due.

Tasted on 5/6/11 on draft at The Twisted Spoke. Pours absolutely oil black with an average brown head that slowly recedes to a thin collar of lace. The nose is super intense with tons of darkly roasted malt, fresh coffee, very sweet molasses, and dark chocolate. The flavor is quite sweet with cloying molasses up front, moving to the dark and more roasted flavors dominated by coffee and dark chocolate. The body is massive and creamy with light carbonation and a super long coffee and dark chocolate finish. This beer is quite tasty, but a small pour is plenty.

One of the shockers of EBF! Pours a black as night abyss with a yellow coffee tan head. This has a fantastic coffee nose. Undertones are roast y, bitter sweet, coco, chocolate (dark), licorice, and some booze of course. Big coffee notes transfer quite nicely to the flavor, no hint of pepper whatsoever, huge bitter dark chocolate warming. Honestly astounding for the given ABV, hats off!
