UPDATED: NOV 17, 2014 Tap at hops and pie. Clear dark brown with a small but thick brown head. Aromas of roasted malt, coffee, light dark fruit ,and chocolate. Flavor is the same. Medium to full bodied, smooth with some warmth on the end.

Pours jet black with a thin khaki head. Significant amount of legs dripping down the glass. Aroma is very boozy with minimal coffee in the background. Small amount of bourbon and vanilla as well as toffee. Taste is boozy upfront with astringent coffee flavors in the middle followed by subtle chocolate, vanilla and caramel flavors in the finish. Kind of a harsh character to it at this point. Likely aging will subdue this aspect. Mouth feel is thick and viscous. A delicious beer. Pours a thick black with small dark brown head. Big coffee and lactose aromas as well as dark fruits and chocolate. For a beer this big the alcohol is very well masked. Big coffee and chocolate flavours and vinous sherry flavours as well. A nice warmth as it makes its way down to your belly. Awesome.

12 oz bottle served in a tulip. Pours thick inky blackish brown with medium dark mocha head that fades quickly but laces well. Aroma is big dark roasty chocolate malt; fresh coffee, tons of soy sauce, dark chocolate, port, bourbon, leather, oak, and dark fruit. Taste is similar - rich super dark chocolate, molasses, soy sauce, umami, bitter coffee on the finish. Thick coating mouthfeel. Huge beer overall. Quite hot from the booze, though doesn’t taste 16%.

[Bottle, thanks for sharing, Levi!] Pours dark brown with a small brown head. Aroma is sweet soy sauce. The taste is really hot--the alcohol is not well hidden, even for 15.5%. Lots of coconut and anise. Sweet, but not as out of control as I had expected. Good mouthfeel with a long finish. Not one of the best imperial stouts I’ve ever had, nor is it something I would drink regularly, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Bottle courtesy of John. Pours a deep dark black with a medium sized tan head. Big bourbon, chocolate, cocoa, warm roast. Big, thick and sticky, lots of body, chewy roast, coffee, chocolate, bourbon, cocoa. Long roast, bourbon. Lovely.

Like the previous review, I am surprised to see this is rated so highly. Black of course. Thick and heavy palate and almost no carbonation, which is ok for an imperial stout. The whiskey is prominent in the flavor and aroma, and mostly overwhelms even the coffee. Sweet, some flavor of green pepper, and a little soy sauce.

Anyways this is currently listed as one of the top 50 Imperial Stouts on ratebeer much to my surprise so I figured now is as good as time as any to see what the fuss is all aboot. Well first off (to no surprise) this is a brash, boozy, very warming beer with a good amount of bourbon barrel influences. There is some roast and espresso notes but it is hard for them to shine. Light bittersweet chocolate, toffee, tobacco, and earthy almost peaty notes as well. Being barrel aged AND a coffee imbued stout the mouthfeel actually isn’t that thin, but by no means would I call it viscous either. Unlike that BA abortion I had last night, I could see this aging into something more wonderful. For now it is a bit too unruly to be even a top 200 Imperial Stout IMO.

12 oz Bottle. Tasted on 1/13/15. Bottle from Moore Liquor. Aroma was very strong with the bourbon followed by chocolate & coffee notes. Taste thick & sticky with a mix of chocolate roasted grains & lots of bourbon. To me the bourbon was over powering the flavor more than the coffee. Really prefer Mephistopheles over this one.

Keg at Churchill’s, San Marcos, 14/11/14. Pitch black with a decent tan swirl. Nose is sweet coffee notes, tiramisu mix, brown sugars, light roast, booze notes, sweet all round. Taste comprises big coffee cake notes, light mineral tones, spice, chocolate, coffee fudge, earthy roast. Full bodied, oily feel - slightly cloying but not overbearingly so, sweet licks tempered with a little roasty charr in the close. Solid stuff for the ABV, a little on the sweet side as you may well expect from the ABV on display, but a solid coffee infused sipper.
