Black with a khaki head. Hella coffee, espresso, roasted beans, more coffee. Very smooth on the palate, it’s like drinking coffee with alcohol.

Roasty aroma. Color is black with a tan head. Flavor is intense with coffee and boozy character and a touch of alcohol in the finish. Notes: On tap at the new brewery during GABF week ’15

Sometimes the craft crowd gets a little too excited about high-ABV beers. Look, I like getting more booze as much as the next person, but too often ultra-huge beers sacrifice balance and flavor to get more alcohol. Somehow, Avery managed to make an extremely potent Imperial Stout that doesn’t suck. Pour is like ink/oil - whatever simile you like best. Aroma has roasted malt and tons of alcohol because how could it not? Flavor has espresso and bittersweet cocoa. Yes, it’s warm and full-bodied. Still, it’s unbelievably smooth for something 17%+.

Draft at the brewery. Pours opaque black with a frothy, dark brown head. Smells like strong malt, coffee, toffee, burnt grain, floral and grassy hops, leather, and hints of smoke, tar, wood, alcohol, raisin, date, and prune. Tastes dry, spicy, sweet, acidic, and bitter. Medium body and carbonation.

Draft pours black with a tan head and massive thunder thigh legs. Big coffee, bourbon, chocolate, booze aroma. The flavor is sweet and boozy as all hell. Big chocolate, coffee, bourbon. Thick and full of alcohol. Damn doggz, I’m tweaking for realz.

Pours a slick black with a creamy frothy tan head. Super roasty, tons of straight-up cold-press coffee! Tastes like Starbucks, ha, really it does, a bit too much booze in the aftertaste though. Body is slick creamy and fluffy.

PartyFowle (954) - - MAY 20, 2015
Draft. Pitch black, inky. The deep cinnamon-hued head doesn’t last long. Brilliant coffee aroma. Oily, funky beans; toasted sourdough; soil and chocolate in minuscule amounts. The flavor: so very much coffee. It even overpowers the underlying Mephistopheles -- a feat I didn’t think was possible. Rich, roasty, oily. Toasted bread again, some cocoa, a finish of ethanol and spicy Arabica. Full, creamy body. Thick and smooth, like drinking thick hot chocolate. If you want to enjoy this one, you better damn well like coffee. Huge bean flavor, not a ton of stout. A little hot. Good for a few ounces, too rich for much more.

Mittenator (1612) - Michigan, USA - MAY 17, 2015
