COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Jacob Spears, our 6th Great Grand Uncle, is credited as the first distiller to label his whiskey "Bourbon." He built his distillery in Bourbon County, Kentucky in 1790 - 203 years before began brewing. While obviously a bit too late to produce Uncle Jacobís wash, weíve instead created something far more complex. In his honor, we present this robust, silky smooth, full-bodied and altogether extremely American rendition of an Imperial Stout aged for 6 months in the very finest bourbon barrels. This explains a lot about our penchant for big brews! Itís in our blood!
Brewed with Rocky Mountain Water, Malter Barley, Flaked Oats, Hops and Yeast.

Pours black with a finger of thick tan head. Aroma is distinct bourbon barrel, vanilla, coffee, muscovado, dates and figs, chocolate, light butterscotch. Marvelous. Taste is incredibly muscovado and alcohol sweet, tons of bourbon and port barrel with coffee and chocolate in the background. Finish is lingering alcohol bitter. Body is full and creamy to sticky. Flat carbonation.

12 oz bottle shared with Tmoney99 in August í12. Pours dark brown to blackwith a medium sized dense mocha head. The aroma has caramel, bbourbon, dark chocolate, black cherry, roasted malt, wood and was surprisingly not very boozy. The flavor had big syrupy caramel, bourbon, vanilla, dark chocolate, dark fruit with some woody accents. I thought this would be really hot given the alcohol, but it was pretty easy to drink.

UPDATED: MAY 20, 2014 A strong, solid stout aged in bourbon barrels. Smells very strong with whiskey flavors and tastes of whiskey as well. Definitely does not taste like a 17% beer. Solid beer for this strength, and really enjoyed the whiskey smell/ flavor in the stout base. Could not drink much of this one, but a good aged stout. EDIT: just had KBS tonight and now having this again. Comparatively KBS has better balance. This is quite a bit sweeter and has less bourbon flavors than KBS. This is still great, but a step below KBS. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

2012 version. Today I had 11 Avery beers and this one was the best of a great bunch. Wow. Big, bold, sweet boozy bourbon, dark chocolate, sweet chocolate. Just a huge beer, but the ABV did not come off as 17%. Big roast and linger sweet bourbon finish. Damn.

Bottle. The booziness comes through on the nose, but this beer is dangerously smooth, to the point where I would fear buying myself a bottle and drinking myself to death after forgetting this beer is over 17% ABV. Damn good showing by Avery.

Bottle to snifter (thanks Chris). Looks good; a dark cola with thin beige lacing. Smells and tastes good too; chocolate and booze. Nice on the mouthfeel; it doesnít taste 17+%. good beer.

Strong and complex aroma and taste with a perfectly thick jet black pour and lingering mouthfeel that slowly grows. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle shared with friends. Iíll skip to the good stuff. Did it drink like a 17%abv beer? Hell no! This was tasty as hell. Nice balance of bourbon, chocolate, fudge and slight caramel.

Pours black with a small head and a bit oí lace.

The aroma is bourbon & chocolate for the most part. Itís boozy smelling but surprisingly not horribly so. Plenty of vanilla and maple syrup sweetness in the nose. Rich and pungent. Cool.

The flavor is way way boozy, ashy, and over roasty. Extraordinarily rough and alcoholic in the finish. Itís got a good bit of brown sugar and itís more sweet than it is rich, although the raisin and dark fruit thing is good. The bourbon character is pretty damned nice, oaky and vanilla forward, but the alcohol comes across brash and like cheap vodka... Gracious this finishes rough.

The palate is just heavy, not really big and mouth coating, not really pleasantly lingering, just heavy with a wrenching finish.
Kind of a cool beer, my 1oz sample was more than enough, and I didnít want any more of it at all after that was finished.

Bottled on 3/27/12. Poured highly-viscous near-black with a very short-lived, nearly as dark head. The aroma picked up a giant dose of maple, molasses, and rich, sweet bourbon upfront, with layers of vanilla, cocoa, and star anise not far behind.. some black pepper and bourbonny alcohol around the edges, but nowhere near 17% worth.. burned the eyes a little. The flavor opened with tangy, tasty bourbon and oak notes, with a thick wash of aged maple, vanilla, and fudge-like malts following.. spicy, earth and peppery bourbon surrounded and complemented the base beer very well.. picked up some bourbon heat in the nose and belly on the very long, decadently-malty finish.. this was awesome! Heavy-bodied with low carbonation on the palate.. tanginess from the barrel kept it from being cloying.. this was a colossal beer paired with a robust barrel presence, and thankfully it all found balance.
