COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Jacob Spears, our 6th Great Grand Uncle, is credited as the first distiller to label his whiskey "Bourbon." He built his distillery in Bourbon County, Kentucky in 1790 - 203 years before began brewing. While obviously a bit too late to produce Uncle Jacobís wash, weíve instead created something far more complex. In his honor, we present this robust, silky smooth, full-bodied and altogether extremely American rendition of an Imperial Stout aged for 6 months in the very finest bourbon barrels. This explains a lot about our penchant for big brews! Itís in our blood!
Brewed with Rocky Mountain Water, Malter Barley, Flaked Oats, Hops and Yeast.

Bottle. Aroma is boozy, bit rough. Gingerbread, fruit, treacle, very nice. Sticky. Pretty good.

Brown, beige head. Aroma is somewhat green, nice healthy toffee, bit of ashes. Probably needs more time before all characteristics come out. Taste has some raw chocolate, coffee liquor, sweetness also there. Alcohol intense but still wouldnít say itís almost 17 percent. Nice long-sipping beer. Sweet, spicy, vanilla, bourbon, good stuff. Bit too fresh maybe, would love to try the aged version in the future.

April 18, 2015. Bottle at home, vintage 2012 (17.42%). Received in a trade with Ratman197, thanks!
Disclaimer: Drinking this to celebrate my first niece (so Iím finally Uncle Jacob), therefore some bias might occur...
Dense black with a very small brown head. Aroma is bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, canned peaches, oak, roasted malt, prunes, alcohol and light dried fruits. Taste is sweet and bitter in a very good balance, toffee, dark bitter chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, peach. Finish is bitter roasted with sweet toffee, bourbon and peach notes, warming alcohol. Full bodied, smooth creamy oily texture and soft carbonation.

Bottle shared with Bruce in his backyard. Pours very dark brown to black with a slight light mocha head. Lots of roast and some chocolate on the nose. Flavor follows with more chocolate and some bitterness. Surprisingly more light bodied than I had expected. Finishes dry and clean. Really nice.

Aroma is big time bourbon, oak, vanilla and a bit of sweetness for balance. Pours out a bit thin but midnight black with a light brown head that is bigger than I would have expected. Tastes slightly boozy with traces of the oak and vanilla from the aroma. More bourbon heat in the aftertaste but not overwhelming for the ABV. Palate is absolutely spot on. Much silkier mouthfeel than it looked like. This is a must try for anyone who likes mammoth Imperial Stouts. Full of bourbon, full of oak.

Pitch black color. A bit too rough, dark chocolate with a fair amount of oak. Sweet malty mouth with lots of tooties rolls. Very sweet. Still a bit too rough to rate properly. I would like to revisit in a year or two.

If this isnít the smoothest beer Iíve tried at nearly 17% ABV, then I donít know what is. Nearly flawless in almost every way possible. The only think I can think of offputting would be the sweetness. Definitely the top of its class among high ABV beers. Vanilla, roast, bourbon (not too heavy), chocolate, caramel all play a part. A malt forward beer to be sure. The palate is smooth, almost like a milkshake. A meal in itself. But this and the old Hog Heaven are my favorites, with Maharaja close behind. Hit or miss brewery, but this one is a hit.

Bottle, 2014 vintage. Wonderful aroma of rich dark chocolate, roasted malt, bourbon, vanilla and wood. Pours deep black colored with a thin light brown head with good retention and some lacing. Starts with rich roasted malt and chocolate flavors with a thick, oily mouthfeel. Finishes delightfully smooth with excellent notes of bourbon and vanilla joining the other flavors and complementing them nicely with the rich chocolate clinging to the palate making the beer last longer. Absolutely wonderful brew with all of the flavors balancing each other nicely to make a truly elite stout.

Big roasted aroma with lots of oak notes. Pours an opaque black with a large tan head. The bourbon heat is definitely there, but after that subsides thereís a thick coating roasted beer, with vanilla and oak notes. Very full thick mouthfeel, with more heat in the finish. This is a nice sipping beer that should get much better as the heat in it dies.

From notes on 3/30/15 On tap at Avery. Awesome beer. Canít even tell this beer is 16% ABV. Smooth bourbon flavors meld well with the chocolate malt flavor of the beer. Had to buy a bottle to take home.
